i have a laptop from about 1998 or 1999 i don't remember and i used everest to find out information. i am thinking about buying a hard drive for this laptop and on Everest it says that it is ATA 66 but on newegg all i could find is ATA 5, ATA 6, and ATA 7. which one do i get
What brand and model is the laptop and what size hard drive is in there now? If it's from the 90's, it very likely has a bios hard drive size limitation, it may be as low as 8gb. If you are lucky, it may take up to 32gb.
The ATA speeds are a nonissue, everything there is backwards compatible.

i am thinking about one of these 2 but don't know which one http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.asp?Manufactory=&PropertyCodeValue=0&PropertyCodeValue=0&PropertyCodeValue=0&PropertyCodeValue=359%3A7910&PropertyCodeValue=0&description=&MinPrice=&MaxPrice=&SubCategory=380&Submit=Property also is it possible to use a ATA6 on an ATA 5 system. i know that it will go slower but is it possible, besides size what other limitation is there i.e RPM, Cache, etc. and is Hitachi a good notebook hard drive brand

is this one good, i just want this because of the 5400rpm http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822152504
Between Toshiba and Samsung, flip a coin. Neither one is the most reliable drive in the world. The Toshiba has a better warranty, the Samsung has more cache and is faster.
By the way, there's no guarantee that a 30gb drive will work, I'm *assuming* it will because it currently has a 10gb. Apricorn's hard drive upgrade configurator for laptops only lists a 20gb drive for that model, but that may be because they don't carry any 30gb drives. They specifically say that 40, 60, 80, and 100 is N/A. 32gb is a very common bios limitation, it's the next step after 8gb.
