Wierd Solution to big problem

well i was thinking the other day....


I have an L-desk, one side is my work area an the other is where i have my computer. Well I store the tower inside a cupboard below the desk that the monitor sits on..well alot of ties the heat becomes to much of a problem and i'm forced to keep the dorr to the cupboard open.

Well I think i might have a solution.

I'm going to install 2 or 3 fans to the back of the cupboard. It will be 1 intake and 2 exhaust. Now how i'm going to go about powering these puppies and such is a another problem but i was wondering if anyone has ever seen this done? and if so, how?


Basically my blueprint is like this (this is the back of the cupboard)

If you are planning to use 12volt fans...Just go to radio shack or the equivalant and get a 12volt power regulator...there about $20.00 and will power fans pretty nice...You will have to build a harness but alot of the places in the sticky at the top of this forrum sell molex connectors...

It would be a fairly simple easy thing to do...

You can also get 120v ac fans.

Cut slots at the bottom to allow air in and use 120mm fans at the top to exhaust air. Use a power supply where you can control the voltage so you can regulate the fan speed. This will allow you to slow the fan speeds down so the fans are almost completely silent. The 120mm fans are much quieter than the smaller fans per amount of air pumped.

Or buy a regular 12 volt power supply and a potentiometer (variable resistor) to regulate the fan speed.

I just saw a PCI slot adapter that will put molex connectors on the outside of your PC, somewhere in these threads, so that could do it. However, I would suggest using an external power supply just to keep the load off the computer's PSU. Buying or even building a 12 volt adapter is cheap, and the fans would be running all the time, not just when your PC is on.

Place a toggle switch on your computer or somewhere near the front of the computer to turn the 12 volt power supply off...make sure its rated for 120 volts or more.

I'm liking the suggestion about the 120mm fans and I'm going to do the external Powersource any ways, just seems more logical.


I have another question, do you know of anything like a temp. guage or something like that, that i coud buy so i could have a visual reading of what the temp. inside the thing is? I was also wondering if there is a way to make the fans turn on when the inside reaches a certain temp. like around 37 or 38 degrees.

buy a 6inch fan from walgreens for only 8$ a piece....Just put one in and one out. They are ac110 fans

I bought this fan at Home Depot for dirt cheap. Its 6 inches across.
