HSF on MSI 6600GT (PCI-e)

My friend and I put together his new computer tonight. As we were assembling it, I noticed that the HSF on the video card was loose, like it would wiggle around. it wasn't a little wiggle either, it wasn't really pressing down on anything hard at all... is this normal or is there a problem?

That could be a big problem depending on how loose it is. Try to tighten it, and make sure all the little pins are snapped in completely through the card. You should not be able to move it at all if it is in completely.

IF the heatsink/pcb is broken RMA it, or consider an aftermarket HSF if it is only the HS.

It's common with the MSI. Read some reviews on it.

On second thought.... You might want to take care of that. My MSI 6600GT just died on me tonight. Playing a game - bam - black screen. Reboot, no video. Shut down - wait. Boot up, GPU temp reads 95C :eek:

It still works fine in a 2D environment with no fan, but forget playing games.

RMA it NOW.
This is a very common problem on old MSI 6600GT's (new ones have extra brackets).

I am. I saw this as a good opportunity to upgrade too, so I went ahead and ordered an eVGA 6800GT from Newegg - should be here tomorrow.

I'm going to RMA the 6600GT and sell it in the Trading Post when I get it back.

he actually wanted to get a different cooler than stock on it anyway, for the quietness or whatever, so we went ahead and installed an arctic cooling hsf combo. works great now, and rma'ing it would've involved a long drive anyway, so all's well that ends well.
