no sound on Pavilion with ME

I have a Hewlet Packard Pavilion 8860 us/can.
my sound drivers disapeared, I have tried everything I can think of to fix the problem, but I have had no success, the sound device in the machine is the original.
All the drivers in the device manager under the sound,video,game controller branch were wiped out, if someone could find out what is supposed to be there for me or if you have another fix for the problem it would be greatly appreciated

Try the system restore feature of WinME. Roll back your system to a date when you had sound.

I am guessing that you upgraded to ME and then lost the drivers? You should be able to go to HP's web site and at least find out what type of sound you have if not find the drivers there.

Does this computer has a option in the bios where you can enable/disable the Sound and is this a embedded sound onboard or is it addon?
Do you know the name of the SOUND card or Onboard sound..
To find out what kind of sound card controller is installed boot to safe Mode and then open device manager - look if the sound is listed in there and then note down the Brand name and make of it - DL the latest drivers and then you actually should be able to have the sound..

Once installed sound cards will usually show up when in safe mode even if those don't show up in protected mode..

I have tried to run system restore with no luck, I have used the hp application recovery cd, no luck, I went to hp's web site and found out that the name of the onboard sound chip is a crystal sound chip ac97 codec, 3-D sterio, pci,
16-bit sound compatible, I have tried a few other things and have got a couple drivers back but I still have no sound.

I got my sound back, I ran the recovery cd and formated my hard drive.
