Hi,

The only way I can get my Win98 PC to boot WITHOUT a Windows Protection error on startup is to go into:

MSCONFIG - Advanced:
and check the Force Compatability disk mode access option.

Anyone know what this means ??

Many thanks.

this means that either your hard drive has been setup using some "OLD" EZ drive, your bios is configured improper or some other configuration is wrong - it can also be that there are some entries in config.sys which will be loaded during startup and are in conflict with windows..i.e CDrom Drivers etc..

If you are running Win98 - WinMe go to start Run type ASD and click Ok if there is a failure it will tell you so and also what causes the fail..

May also your MOBO's hardrive controllor isn't accepted by windows - Hit the Windows key + Break (Pause) key enter device manager and look if there are any yellow exclamation marks in device manager...

You can also use this - START > RUN >type MSCONFIG32 and click Ok then look out for FORCED HARDWARE..
