Hi there,

I just got copy of Need for speed underground 2 from a Pizza hut deal (free game with two large pizzas and coke :P )

The thing is: When the games starts, its all fine, but the starting page is all wierd.

The background picture of BRooke burke and the two cars look fine, but all the text and objects are just little icons of the background picture!!

It's just so bloody strange.

Here's the link, i've also attached the screenshot as a jpg.

http://www.space.net.au/~rubber/n4su2screenshot.jpg

here are my specs:

video: AGP 256meg radeon 9600 series (brand was call Triplex)

celeron 2.8

512 ram

80gig drive

WinXp pro (service pack 1)

I was running very old catalyst drivers 4.2 - now updated to 5.6 last night from ATi site - just the actual driver and not the other stuff like control centre. It was a 10meg file.

But still getting same problem.

I was thinking of putting in my old AGP 64meg geforce mx400 card, and see what wld happen, just to make sure it was the radeon card. cant be bothered at this time of night.

or perhaps im not using service pack 2?? *shrug*

hope you guys can help!!

Cheers!

Welcome to PCMech, praet123 :)

Have you tried reinstalling the game?

Hi,

I haven't reinstalled it, I will try again though.

The thing is, I downloaded the demo a few days ago just to see if it was worth getting, and I got the same problem.

So I thought, must be just the demo..

I shall try again. I hope it works, cos I will be one annoyed (to say the least) customer!

wish me luck

Thanks for your help.

I had a Gigabyte Radeon 9600 Pro 256mb and I had nothing but problems with NFSU 2 as well as Halo. The problems I had were wierd screens just like you are having and lots of crashing. Since the card was part of my new built I traded it back with my builder for a ATI 9600Xt 128mb. You might be in need of a differenct card as well. Just my .02 cents.

I've reinstalled the game twice, and tried downloading ati radeon driver v5.6 with catalyst control centre, but it requires service pack 2 to work.

i've only got SP1 installed, and havent got SP2.

i tried installing the driver with ccc and doesnt work cos i get exception errors when i get into windows. i tried the game anyway, but still didnt work, so rolled back to existing driver v5.6 w/out the catalyst control cente.

im gonig to get xp with sp2 and see what happens

incidently, i tried this game at work with a geforce mx400 64 meg card with SP2 on it, and worked fine. i just think radeon cards dont cater for many games as nvidia cards do. i dunno *shrug*

i have an old geforce mx400 64 meg card and just see what happens when installed.

I have Radeon 9600Xt 128 and NFSU2 works perfect. The problem seems to be with companys that make the 9600PRO 256mb that isn't ATI. Like I said my Gigabyte version of your card did the same thing and I traded it back for the XT 128. You also said you got it to work on the MX4000 so its definately your video card giving you problems. If I were you I would ditch that 9600Pro and get something else maybe a 9800Pro ATI version or Geforce 5500-up.

btw, I think you won't be able to use the MX400 to test NFSU2, as I believe it doesn't support DirectX9, which is required for the game... this was what I found when I tried to run it on this computer anyway
