Error after adding (ISA) Sound Blaster 16

Hello,

I have this older PIII system which I wanted to equip with 2 soundcards. There is allready one on-board. Then I added an older ISA Sound Blaster 16 to the system. But when I booted I immediatly got an error in the POST phase.The error says:

RESOURCE CONFLICT - PnP Device

What can I do to make this error go away. I allready tried some different IRQ settings in the BIOS, but (in my hands) this didn't really work out very well. I only got more errors. I'm not really experienced when it comes to IRQ & DMA settings.

ISA can't do plug and play. Do you know if the onboard sound is tied to the PCI bus? If it isn't, then manually configuring the address ranges/IRQ's/DMA's is the only way to go.

I found the manual and there is section about "PCI bus interupts" and it states that: PCI bus interupt "B" is tied to the "AC'97 soundcard". Links to the manuals:

So I think this means that the on-board sound is tied to the PCI bus, right?
Is there a good on-line guide on how to set IRQ's and DMA's in a system?

Ow btw, when I'm in windows XP. Both soundcards function normally. Why is that? Does Windows override BIOS instructions or something?

Yes, the onboard is on the PCI bus.

But I'm confused, you said you get a POST error that there is a resource conflict, but it loads Windows anyway?

Yes, it gives me the option to go into "setup" (BIOS) or to "continue".

Windows can assign different IRQ's, yes, so presumably it's sharing/giving them out so that everything can function properly.

Later ISA cards can be capable of PnP, can't they? I swear I've got a NIC somewhere which is ISA PnP...

Go to the control panel, click system, then hardware tab, then device manager. Does anything have a marker next to it such as exclamation marks etc?

Nope, that's the weird thing. The SB16 (ISA) and on-board AC'97 (PCI) soundcards are metioned without markers. So...

Error in BIOS: Yes
Error in Windows XP: No

Also when I check the properties of both sounddevices, they both have IRQ's assigned.

SB16 (ISA):
IRQ: 05
DMA: 01
DMA: 03

AC'97 (PCI)
IRQ: 07

Yes, I'm mistaken, the later ISA can do PnP. But since there is a resource conflict at the start then the ISA card is clashing somewhere. Unfortunately troubleshooting resource conflicts is not my thing, so we will have to see if someone else has the answer.

Thanks for your time Ric449. It's become more of an annoying thing during start-up than that it gives me trouble during windows sessions. So otherwise I'll just press a key more while starting up :rolleyes: .

You could always try to free up IRQ's by disabling things like "Assign IRQ to VGA" or USB or parallel/serial ports, anything you don't use really. Then you may have enough free to assign an individual IRQ to everything...

Just an idea! Not sure if it'll work though :)

Hey that was the needed eureka moment. I solved it by disabling the paralell en serial ports.
