PROBLEM: Sound card software -- won't reinstall. Internet phone programs won't function.

SYSTEM: Windows 98 2nd edition, Pentium III, 85% resources, 550 mhz, 128 mb ram, 32 bit file system, 10.2 gigs, 56K Conexant modem (all purchased 9-1999).

SOUND: Creative Labs Soundblaster 64 AWE, purchased 9-1999.

MALFUNCTIONS: Everything was fine until a couple of days ago. Then Explorer had to be repaired & Windows had to be reinstalled. Now my internet phone programs won't open. System tells me microphone & voice something are identified with some other program (what program?) & must be released. System also says my sound card is not configured properly.

ATTEMPT TO REPAIR: Tried to reinstall my Creative Soundblaster AWE64 software (via CD). It aborts during setup and will not reinstall.

WHAT DO YOU RECOMMEND?"

Is regular sound working? Or no sound at all?
try going into device manager (it's right-click on my computer, properties, device manager, just in case you aren't sure). Go to where it says sound, video, game controllers and click that. then remove all the sound card items- there are probably 2 or 3. Also, see if there is another item in the main list there that says Other Devices, if so, look whats under it and if there is anything that looks like it might be sound, remove it too. Reboot. (Don't worry, windows should put it all back in).
Did you try reinstalling the phone software?

Hi,
try this I think it will take care of it..
First enter the Bios and in Peripherals set PnP OS to NONE ..
then pull out the Conextant and start your computer in safe mode ... in device manager remove the modem and also the Creative Blaster Software then in add/remove programs remove the Modem drivers..

Also make sure that you remove everything concerning the sound blaster (ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS) which by default (if you used the cdrom of it will be in (C:\Program Files\creative)best after uninstalling all of it remove also the Folder of it and then defrag your hard drive..
restart - leaving the modem out of the computer - when the computer start up make sure that you will see" Creative AWE64 or alike "just right after the hard drive initialization - if you run windows 98 there is no need to install the drivers form the CREATIVE Soundblaster CDrom - let windows install it's drivers for it..

make sure that you can hear the sound and then shut down insert your modem and restart - Install the drivers and this should work now..

This is a common issue with Winmodems..
