hi i recently built a new computer and i bought northwood p4 3.2 cpu because i heard that it was cooler than prescott. but it still ran hot despite what other people said- it ran 60-65 degrees. so i purchased one giant looking cpu heatsink from zalman http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16835118113
and cpu temperature dropped to 40-50 degrees
im wondering if this is normal or not

Sounds real good to me. Got 2.8GHZ northwood runnin at 45 degrees celsius and I think maybe 52 celsius at full load for 10 hours straight (thats the highest it ever got before the video encoding program finished never really gets that hot any other time). But I'm just using artic silver paste and Speeze Ultra cooler for 2.8GHZ comps.

Was this a temperature reading from the BIOS or a software/utility? The original heat sink fan that came with the retail packaging of the Intel Processor is guarenteed to work under the warranty.

yes, i looked at the temperature of the cpu from the bios and from the software utility. they both indicated temp around 60-65 degrees.
do you think i should return cpu? i bought this one from mwave..

nah don't return it. That is the largest northwood core processor made. It's only natural to be a little on the hot side. but 60-65 degrees is nothing dangerous. Also what kind of room are you in. I got my comp in a small computer room that syays about 80-83 degrees. I moved my comp into my 71 degree living room got down 33-35 degrees.
i got a pc with a northwood 3.2 cpu, and a zalman 7000alcu...
and it runs perfectly...
idle at 38, under load at 45
