Well, obviously profit is their number one priority, but I would say security is a close second, simply because they're having a lot of trouble with it and it is coming back to bite them and thier profits. A lot of people are switching to the Mac (desktop) or Linux (server) because of the gaping holes in Microsoft's products. They have to put security at the top of their list because even big companies go bust if they make miscalculations.

Before you believe, for any reason, that security is a Micorsoft priority read this : http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/07/15/microsoft_claria/

Ok the comparisons between Linux and Windows apart (the author seems to forget the target audience of both OS'), but I digress .. I would agree with Ballmer's statement that Microsoft's #1 priority is security. Under Windows gone past, Microsoft was mainly involved in looking forward to its next release than it has been on securing / patching the current release! However most will agree, that MS is spending an unprecedented amount of consideration on patching and securing. So in essence the statement is true. The focus has been on security as never before.
I just dont understand why such reports insist on twisting words around. Steve Ballmer never made a claim that Microsoft is bundling up ultra-sophisticated security tools, nor does he claim that Microsoft is at the head of the WiFi consortium for creating standards that dissuade plain text passwords. He's just stated that Microsoft has made security patches a priority .. what's wrong with it?
Yes profit is the #1 priority for anyone, but support and patches does cost money and take away from profit.
Its news to me that Microsoft is losing market share to Apple in the desktop market because of security issues. I dont think its true, but I would like to see reports on it if you have any handy. Personally, I forsee Apple sales slumping since Jobs' announcement of switching processor architecture till it actually hits the shelves.
