i have a department that has 6 comps. many of the emloyees use email for business use but somtimes someone comes in and gets on the internet to browse or what have you. is there a way i can set a password to log on through internet explorer. our company always has the internet hooked up so all they have to do is double click the ie icon. any suggestions? i figured if there was a password i can provide it as a as need basis.

Also, how are you connecting to the Internet? Dialup modems in each machine? Broadband?

There are various software programs designed to restrict internet access via a password. If your objective is to restrict access then anytime you provide a password you would of course have to change it afterwards.

Provided you are using W2k or XP, in a wokgroup environment (not domain), it would be a simple matter of logging onto each local machine as administrator and setting security permissions on iexplore.exe to deny access to the specific user(s) who have accounts on the machine that you want to restrict access to. If they click the IE icon they will get an access denied message.

If you need to allow someone to use the internet you can either set up a local account for that reason and grant access to iexplore.exe or temporarily log on as admin and change security settings for the user. About anyway you do it though you will have to change a password or security setting afterwards to again restrict access.
