My university provides a free download of Symantec Antivirus Corporate 9.0 for all of its students. I am wondering whether or not this is a better alternative to AVG, both being free. In addition to good protection, I am concerned about system resources. Thanks!

I dunno if Corporate is any different than Symantec's NAV for home users, but that's the knock - Norton is viewed as a resource hog. If the Symantec download is free, you could give it a shot. The other knock on their stuff is that it's bloated and difficult to remove. I don't think you have any worries using AVG as far as either protection or resources are concerned.

I have been using AVG free for ma PC it now runs smoother that when i was running NAV 2005. I for one would advise you to use both if your PC can handle it.
Otherwise roll with AVG

Corporate is a bit better than Norton. Doesn't hog quite as much resources. It is tied into the Corporate Server and they can initiate scans on your machine. AVG is good and does a fine job .

SAV's footprint is negligible. And yes, it leaps waaaaay ahead of NAV. That's because SAV is designed for IT people, rather than the average Joe with all the "hand holding" features NAV has.

It is as good as AVG. Personally, I've been using it since 7.6 and before I crossed paths with AVG, so I've stuck with SAV.

But if you're concerned about licensing if you move off of the network that supports SAV, then you may want to install AVG instead.

If I have the unmanaged version of SAV, which I do, will I still run into problems if I'm no longer on the server?

Eventually you will when the license expires.

Is there a way to check how long it will last?

If it's an unmanaged installation, then no.

You only have problems if you run it as managed, because it will look to the server for virus definition updates. With managed, you cannot do a live update.

For managed SAV clients, the ability to run LiveUpdate can be enabled from the parent server. But it is disabled by default.

You can simply run Symantec's Intelligent Updater to update your virus definitions. http://www.sarc.com/avcenter/download/pages/US-SAVCE.html

I have a managed version of SAV on my home PC, which was purchased from my former employer. The annoying thing for me, is that my SAV runs a virus scan nightly at 10:30 PM. I cannot change this schedule since my PC is no longer managed by the parent server. I wind up rebooting half the time to kill the virus scan.

In your case with all of those annoyances, I would suggest that you ditch SAV and install AVG.
