anti-aliasing on or off?

hi i just wanted to know if i should enable anti-aliasing and/or anti-anistropic mode or not.
and what is pro/con of enabling these modes.

my computer spec- p4 3.2c, 1gh 2x 516mb ram, 6600gt 128mb, 60g hdd.

ran these tests at 1024 x 786 resolution, max 4 anistropic filter on, and AA OFF

aqua bench mark score- 31000
3dmark2003 score- 4705

Anti-Aliasing smooths out the jagged edges on diagonal objects. The higher the AA level the better it will look but you will also get a bigger performance hit. The performance hit you get by enabling AA depends on your video card. You can experiment with different settings and see how it works.

I would use the in game settings for AA and AF before I tried a graphics card setting to force them in everything.

That's bascially the same way I set AA and AF.

Some games can handle higher settings than others, so I don't set AA and AF globally.

I'm using an R9700pro card. In some games I can use medium AA/AF with so little performance penalty, and not in some other game.
In some games where beautiful views are making the gameplay more exciting, I would activate AA/AF if possible.
Anyway, I think 6600GT in such spec should have scored more in 3dmark2003...maybe (just maybe), coz I think its performance is far better than my R9700.Mine scored 4590... :confused:

2 x 256MB pc3200@266MHz

The 6600 is roughly equivalent to a 9600pro or XT. It's more of a budget card than anything else.

You are talking about the plain old 6600, right? The 6600GT beats the 9800 Pro in most aspects.

That's right. The GT version does beat even 9800pro in most aspects. And so I think that this his 6600GT, or his system might be in a little problem, by looking at his 3dmark score.
I think it should be a lot faster than mine...

In my system with a 6600GT I get 4095 in 3DMark03 and 2203 in 3DMark05. My system is quite a bit slower than yours though.

Are u sure about the score...? I think even the CPU is less powerful, but a better card should score more, just because the test is mainly emphasizing on VGA's capability. The duration of "GPU tests" is a lot longer than the CPU tests, so most of the score is produced by the GPU.
It's just my common sense... :D

i have a 6600gt and by upgrading to the latest nvidia drivers i get a 3dmark05 score of 3400 that is before overclock i am in the process of overclocking my system now. before i installed new drivers my score was just shy of 3000 having the latest drivers makes a big difference...as you can see. 6600gt is a great card and i love it.
