I have pics and specs of some of my older computers in this thread (http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=37897=pc+innards). I have a newer 2.8C P4 system but it's in the Antec SX830 case that my PIII 1GHz used to be in and it looks pretty much the same except the ribbon cables aren't folded up like before.

All of my computers are in plain beige mid-tower cases with no windows or lights...I'm almost 48 years old so there is no "pimpness" about any of them.

Lol that case looks nice and clean in the old thread. some good cable work. Btw i always use the similar types of fan grilles u have on the inside of ur build, i love them cuz they look simple and dont have stupid designs, plus i imagine that with the design of concentric rings they are much better airflow wise then ones with aliens, radioactive symbols, biohazard, whatever. Not to mention that anythings better then a random pattern of drilled holes for a fan. My exhaust fan i recently installed i couldnt figure out if it was on intake or exhaust--even on full speed it wasnt able to blow any air out of those little holes, it was coming right back in around the sides of the fan because it just couldnt get out. my dremel made short work of the holes, now its making a huge difference even on the lowest setting.

But why do you have them on the inside too? any reason? ive had a couple of times when i start up my computer after tweaking things to hear that crazy buzzing sound (the one that makes u think ur comp is about to blow up) when a wire gets pushed into one. Is that the only reason for the grilles on the inside?

And also, those fan clips that seem to be in all antec cases, are those pretty much unique to the antec cases, or do other companies use them? Id have to say after installing/moving/flipping tons of fans, its a real pain to get those included screws in, because you usally have to strip the screw just to get it in all the way. the fans dont raely have screw holes, just flat holes that u need to "break in" for the first time by putting those screws in.
My only complaint with those would be that you are stuck with whatever size fan goes there, but that goes for all premade fan holes unless there is a little more room for something larger.

You've gotta be known on the islands as Your Pimpness!! :DLOL...no, I'm not known as "Your Pimpness", more like "The Clown"...But why do you have them on the inside too? any reason?Originally it was just to keep any wires from getting sucked into the blades of the rear exhaust fans, but I just attached the grills to the front intake fans because I thought it looked more "finished" like that. But now I don't even use front fans anymore so those grills went into other computers. And also, those fan clips that seem to be in all antec cases, are those pretty much unique to the antec cases, or do other companies use them?Other companies use them. I've seen them in Cheming, Chieftec and even Thermaltake cases.

do you own ur own computer shop?Nope.or do you work at one.Nope.

Computers are just a hobby for me and I just "work" at home. Don't even make any money off 'em. I just build, upgrade, fix/repair for family, friends and a few friends of friends. Roughly about 30 people...that's enough for me. Just worked on 5 computers last week that were either infested with spyware, viruses or had broken parts. A few were also upgraded since I had 'em.

I belive its not what all you have in the case that really matters, but what you can do with what you got that really counts.

no, its really all about the looks of the comp and the performance. A common phrase I live by in sports and gaming you look good you play good.

Cricket
07-15-2005, 01:27 AM
Not all of us here are concerned with the looks of the computer or how it performs in games.

Personally I really don't care what my computer looks like and I'm not a gamer so all out performance is not a concern of mine. I currently have 4 working computers...a PIII 600MHz, a PIII 800MHz, a PIII 1GHz and a P4 2.8GHz...and I use the PIII 600MHz much more than my P4 2.8GHz. It does what I want it to do and it runs pretty stable for a computer that has had the same install of Win98SE for about 4 years. As long as my computer are running well and doing what I want them to do, I'm a happy camper.

haha i know i know, just a personal motto. I learned from my dad that if it looks good on the outside it sure as hell better be impressive on the inside (quality wise not looks) other wise it is a piece of junk. and i go for looks so thereofore i have to follow up with good quality.

What do you want a pic of a plain beige case for?

http://www.tomshardware.com/howto/20020521/case-18.html

There. Picture it with 2 opticals and a floppy. I don't even have a case badge.

Cricket - the P3-800 and Asus P2B-F have been retired and passed on to a friend, it's got an Intel D850MVL and a Northwood 1.6 in it now.

Folks, I do care about appearance. I do not like styled cases, I do not like windows, I do not like lights. I like plain looking cases and I prefer beige. My computer is on the floor under my desk, and that's where I want it. Out of sight, out of mind, blend in with the surroundings. I don't want to look at the thing. All I need to do is be able to reach down and insert/remove CD's and floppies. I'm not a gamer, to me a computer is a tool, not a toy.

On the inside, the cables are all stock ribbon cables, somewhat neatly bundled using twist ties, not zip ties, so it's easier to undo and redo them when I do work inside it, which is not often. There's no jacketing or sleeving on the power supply cables.

My other PC is in the exact same case GLC. Except I painted it black and silver. I don't like flashy lights and absurd looking cases but I do like a sleek aluminum case with no windows as you can see HERE (http://community.webshots.com/photo/342397658/342445923AwfqJL).

I don't care what my computer looks like too much. I have a case window with a PSU that has blue lights. I took off some fan LED's I have because they annoy me. Looks in general don't bother me.

I hope cricket and glc and all the other great members are here for many years to come. You guys are great, no matter what your computer looks like!

Believe it or not i actually prefer fairly simple cases. crickets looks real good especially the inside, and hi ho's does too, i like the color and it all matches well. Thats kinda the look im going for here. most people throw in whatever lights and anyhting they can find, but i have a silver/blue case, so i got silver drive covers for my cd drive, and a silver fan controller that matches my case exactly. all the inside lights are blue, and my external hdd is a silver color that matches the case exactly too. I like simple fan grilles-the kind you see in crickets build. To me i prefer a simpler, pretty much box of a case, maybe a nice paintjob and some fans that match well. Its more about making parts look good TOGETHER then combining whatever random "pimpin" parts u find. For example, anyone who wants to see a NICE looking computer, take a look at FLG's thermaltake watercooled case. The blue and neon green scheme looks AWESOME together and he did what is one of the best paintjobs ive ever seen. He definetely took alotta time to match up the correct parts to make his build look amazing.

well i like looks but i feel that looks arent everything. what is important to me is the performance, if i have a slow crappy pc but the out side looks good then its crap and deserves to be throw out. one thing i cant stand is a slow computer so im more of performance then looks but looks are nice (next case i get im gonna get a lian-li probaly because there nice cases, light, and dont have side windows, stock that is. they are great for modding but i never modded id like to try it soon on my old dell mid tower case its a plain looking case.

EDIT: oo i saw ur "pimp" yellow overall type of pants cricket in ur photo of you doing lawn work. i want to get a pair of those :)

It seems like people who are around computers a lot (like Cricket and glc) tend not to have really fancy case or equipment. I guess the novelty wears off after a while. It's funny, at this local computer shop by me, the have tons of computers and parts everywhere, all top of the line, new stuff, but their cash register is like from the 80's. Is that what it is like for you guys? Your around them a lot so they don't seem as cool to you, you'd just rather stick to stuff that works that stuff that looks good and is crap?

So, according to this thread:
PR is 57
Cricket is 48
And GLC is at least 10000000 years old, but can repair computers

Now that I think about it, are there any moderators within the 18-25 age range?? I don't think there are are there??

I got a lot of respect for you, shall we say "older" gentlemen who are into PC's. I guessed PR was in his 40's but i always thought Cricket and GLC were a lot younger maybe mid 30's. Heck if i learn as much as you guys know by the time i'm 48 then i'll be a happy man (only 23 BTW)

Eh call me crazy, but I like my computer to be eye appealing. I really don't like the oddly designed, curvy looking cases (like the one I have now), but I don't want my computer to look exactly like everyone elses. I'm not a huge performance geek, I'm still running an Athlon XP 1700+ at 266mhz, but I still like the uniqueness of a customized case, but I'm more of a fan of practicality. If I can kill two birds with one stone, awesome. When choosing between a generic black case fan or a LED one, since they are the same price I'll go with the LED one. I prefer black cases to beige, not only because of looks but because you can tell when you haven't wiped your beige case down with windex for over half a year. I'll sleeve my cables and such, but not because of how it looks (although it's a plus), but because a wall of IDE cables would be sacriligious to the brand new fan to help pull the air. I like a window, but a simple one... no fancy designs or anything. It gives me peace of mind to be able to peer into my computer and see that everything is working smoothly (except that sputtering NB fan). If I could afford it, by all means I would have a dual AMD system with 2 cards in SLI and a terrabyte of ram, but I'm not going to put myself in debt or financial discomfort in doing so.

MaxRat

I am 34...

I still like an attractive case... But... the kid in me likes the bling appeal... I have a Skyhawk case I have modded with a full window...
I have a ThermalTake silver UFO cpu fan (white/blue lights) and blue leds on the vid card (factory) And the Super Talent memory fans have multi-colored lights....

When I fire my pc I swear the cops are in the back yard ...all those flashhing pc lights....

I may add this was fun to build... All I do is surf and rip/burn dvd's so it's way overkill....I don't play games.....

??? In my experience, dark colours show dirt and dust much worse than light coloured ones. If you don't believe, next time you're out and about look at a dirty light-coloured car and a dirty dark-coloured one

RazorDX
07-27-2005, 11:35 PM
I know that darker cases show dust a lot more, but damn some of the beige cases I've seen are just raunchy looking... but seriously, my case doesn't get much smog or construction dirt on it. It's more like finger-smudges and such around the power button/reset button, and all over the optical drives (referring to the family computer). Most dark cases, all you need is a quick wipe with your hand or a sock. If you want to get fancy, a rag. A beige case, however, will probly need some kind of cleaner.

Hi Ho
07-27-2005, 11:38 PM
That's why I like my aluminum case. :) It doesn't show dust and it doesn't collect dirt and change color.

LA22
07-28-2005, 04:53 AM
I like cases that have some style to them, but not to much. I want mince to be different then just a standard looking case like a Dell case. But if it is to fancy then forget it, that just makes it ugly
