cant install 98 se

hi i have a old athlon k7 700mhz and a gigabyte ga-7ixe mobo i am tring to install 98se and it wont let me it comes up with a error just when it is copping the files and then it stopps and comes up with some error and i anit sure what it means if any one could help as i want to get this one going as it is faster than my current desktop. if any one can help

What's the exact error message?

How many sticks of RAM do you have installed? If more than one, try removing all but one stick and try again.

What are your complete system specs? We need brand and model.

I'd echo Cricket's request for a few more specs. Following the memory idea: if you have a half hour to try testing the memory with, that will let you know if the sticks are good: try MemTest86 from http://www.memtest.org (instructions are there on the site).

Also, make sure to look in the Bios Setup for that motherboard, and temporarily Disable the Bios Antivirus protection (if it exists - it will be an item in the Setup screens). While you're in the Bios Setup, make sure the settings for everything else looks OK, so that you're not accidentally overclocking (which can generate errors).

Also check your installation media: if a CD, look for scratches.

this is as it says it on the screen. i got a lot fither this time as i set bois to default but it still wont let me go all the way. any ideas, and the spec of it is a gigbyte ga-7ixe mobo a amd athlon k7 it is ment to be 700mhz but now it says 806mhz :confused: it has 256mbs ram and a 30gb hd

SUWIN errors are almost always faulty ram.

You will get the same errors, if your CPU runs hot (overclocked) or your memory and FSB do not match. the hint here is your statement "amd athlon k7 it is ment to be 700mhz but now it says 806mhz", when you set the BIOS to "Default", it looks like either the multiplier has changed or the FSB setting, a 15% overclock is a big jump, reduce the speed of your CPU back to it's 700 MHZ setting and all should be well.

ok will try that and where will the setting be in bios and how do i do it as i have never under or over clocked any thing before ??

Just been looking at the manual for your motherboard, and it looks as though the settings cannot be changed from within the BIOS, I would then suggest that you first try to reset the Bios again. If nothing improves then you will need to open the manual and the case and check that the switches are set correctly for the CPU. "page 15 of the manual" If you do not have a manual to hand you can download from the link below.

If you haven't been inside the case to change the switches and they look as though they are set to the correct pattern, then I would suggest switch to the opposite position, then back to the original position for each. it could be a simple as oxide on the switch contact, particularly if the board has not been used for a while.

try this first before messing with the hardware.

i assume ur using a startup disk? which gives access to your cd-rom drv's?

make sure u tell pc to boot from floopy.

at the a prompt go to c: run your scandisk, chkdsk, mem /? use with any extra cmds and anything else that u can to test it, then reboot back to floppy

go to c:
cd windows

[ok u might can bypass that but for some reason if i go to windows dir it knows to go there too]

go to F: [your cdrom drive with the win98 cd]
cd win98

type
setup /?

you'll get various options ie: setup /ie /is etc.. make sure you use as many as u can and dont use the one that doesnt like the logitec mouse option MAKE SURE you USE the option to bypass ram, scandisk, startup disk, bulletins and what ever.

if you have restarted the setup numerous times there might be an added line to the autoexec and config sometimes after its attempted more than couple times the entries are removed.

if they're there remove the lines so that win98 setup thinks its a clean install and wont remember the errors from before.

let it setup and all should be ok after you get win98 setup run some test to make sure all is ok and that the errors where that of some incompatibility to something else.

read the setup.txt and others on the win98 disc
