I just installed a second 160gb SATA drive on my server to have RAID 1. when i installed the second drive which is installed in the hard drive carriage, and both drives are right next to each other, but there is are no fans blowing directly on the drives? should i mod the case and install a small fan that blows on the drives? the pc im talking about is the dimension 4700 listed below. the case only has 1 fan on it that goes to the processor. dell added some green plastic device that channels all the air from that fan to the processor.

my question is am i gonna have a problem with the drives overheating since there is no fan directly blowing on both drives? the drives are installed in the hard drive slots that were designed for this case. im just doing my due diligence so that i dont fry two drives and lose all of my data, which would suck considering iinstalled the second drive for data redundancy........

hard drives do run quite warm, at what temp are you determineing that it is overheating ?
in this hot summer weather cooling a computer is a big factor, and the ambient temp would play a big part in it, most big systems are in a room with air cond to help cool them.
I have seen drives run so hot that you would not hold your hand on them for very long.
if you feel they are too warm, then any help getting them cooler would be good.there is a lot of cooling fans made just for hard drives. and the better air flow in the case is good for all the parts inside the case.

what tool or utility should i use to guage the temp? i just put it in last night, but i just thought about it, and now im a little concerned.

do you recommend any type of hard drive fans?

the room temperature of my home where the server is located is usually around 75 degrees.

there's really nothing special about cooling fans, except the type of bearings it uses and the noise it makes from increased air flow.
look at coolerguys or new egg for any type of fan that will fit your application.

I wouldn't worry about it. I have 3 stacked hard drives in this machine with no direct airflow. If you are still concerned and have any open 5.25" bays, you can put one or both hard drives in 3.5 to 5.25 adapters, or even Coolermaster hard drive housings, and mount one or both there.
