Hello,

I need to fix a Sony VAIO Laptop that has been infected by "tojan.cachecachekit" - a "backdoor" agent. I went through the standard procedures - Adaware, Spybot, MS AV, NAV 2k3, Housecall, Google Search. I'm stuck - I can't get rid of the trojan and the files it has infected. My relative's system, I figured out, hasn't been treated to many Windows Update patches for a while - I found 20+ critical updates that I promptly installed. I attatched the HiJackThis Log - can anyone help me?

Yes - the HJT log is after a Adaware/Spybot/MSAS run as well as NAV in safe mode with Sys Restore Disabled. I will probably end up with a reformatting with the Sony VAIO System/Recovery Disks - looks like the best course of action. Now - just to make sure. The system has three partitions - what looks to be like one Active Partition (the XP Pro SP1 OS boot) as well as a Extended Partition with one formatted logical drive filling about half the entire extended partition. Would Computer Management/Disk Management in Windows XP be able to combine the partitions into one single active partition after reformat? Or would a third-party software such as Partition Magic be needed here?

Run HiJackThis then:

1. Click "Config..."
2. Click "Misc Tools"
3. Click "Open Process manager"

Next, while holding down the CTRL key, locate (if present) and click on (highlight) each of the following:

Now double-check and make sure that only those item(s) above are highlighted, then click "Kill process". Now, click "Refresh", check again, and repeat this step if any remain.

Before we begin, let's move HiJackThis to it's own folder; like c:\HJT. When we're done 'cleaning' off your system, we're going to 'flush' the temporary folders which, with HiJackThis in it's current location, we'll lose both the program and the backups it creates. These backups are important in case we need to restore any 'fixed' entry(s) later.

Also move the "Backups" folder, for HiJackThis, if present.

I haven't pulled the trigered the nuke yet - I'll take a look at what I can do fixing it. As always, thanks a lot Lobos - you are the man (or women) when it comes to Malware removal. I will post back the results when all is done.

Update: I decided that I am going to pull the trigger on the nuke for the system. The system seems hopelessly infected, including some odd task that crashes the router when the laptop is connected via Wi-Fi. The system right now has WinXP Pro SP1 - no doubt, I will be installing Service Pack Two. As it was built by a manufacturer, the best I can do is a "recovery disk" - which, if I'm correct, can reformat a partition. I'm going to reformat both partitions after having backed up the data. I guess the way to go about it is to nuke the non-active boot partition (Disk Management?) and then flush the boot partition.
