If building a PC/laptop what motherboards/sound cards etc are most advisable to have?

Asus, Abit, Gigabyte are all great manufacturers, especially Asus. Sound cards are not a necessity. Mobo's often come with onboard sound and is of decent quality. If you really want one Audigy cards are really good.

That pertains to a PC. You aren't going to build a laptop from parts.
