i have 512 megs of ram in my WINDOWS 98 BOX, i've noticed recently that when I utilize more than 256 megs of ram, I have problems. Windows thinks that i am out of memory. Does windows 98 support a maximus of 256 megs of ram? Is there any way to increase this? I know that win2k support a lot more, but I dont want win2k on this box. I do have a copy of WindowsME, and regardless of all the bugs... is it any good when dealing with 512 megs of ram??:eek:

I have WinME, don't find it any "buggier" than Win95/98, runs great with 512Mb, uses it instead of the swap file. With Win98, you can add under the [386Enh] in the SYSTEM.INI file a line that reads

ConservativeSwapfileUsage=1

This will force Windows to use the RAM instead of the swap file.

With over 512MB installed, you need to restrain vCache, otherwise it takes over all the virtual addresses.

Try setting MaxFileCache=384000 (75% of 512)

You won't need to do anything with WinME, it handles the memory better than Win98 does.

It will use the RAM before using the swap file. Checking system monitor right now, I'm showing 13Mb of unused physical RAM, Swapfile size is 120Mb, swapfile used is 2Mb.
