someone please help. Everytime i defrag my hard drive, i get a message saying that the contents have changed, then the whole process starts again. Ive pressed crtl+alt+del, and closed all my programs down, ive restarted to defrag again, but it is still the same. Ive tried to find out what software is running in the background but to no avail. Ive looked in Msconfig and was thinking about canceling all my startup programs, but im a bit dubious to do that. I would appreciate if someone could give me some advice to sort this problem out.

This is often caused by virus checkers and other software that monitors your system, like McA$%**&"#ee.

Try defragging in Safe-mode

Do you have "Fast Find" running in Control Panel? that will cause defrag to restart, you can reemove it with TweakUI

What they are saying is that defrag has to run by itself. Anything that causes a HD event will cause the contents to change, thus the start over. Stop everything, Turn off any power saving modes that you have set up in sys tray and such. Don't play solitaire and such.

Defragging in safe mode is the best way. Just start it and walk away.

Press CTRL+ALT+DEL and close down all programs except Explorer and Systray - then run defrag.

Or you could just use safemode - just as easy because you'll probably want to reboot to get your programs loaded again.
