Wd 120 Hd

Hi all. I have the above mentioned HD or should I say 2 of them installed for about 1 yr with no Problems(works Great). Well this week I have been having to reboot to get my pc running. I hear clicking on the main drive and spinning. It will ckick then spin then click and spin. then after about a minute it boots up and runs fine. Is My hd going bad?

Doesn't sound too good. I'd start making back ups of anything important on that hard drive and then head on over to Western Digital and download the Data Lifeguard diagnostics to test the drive out with.

Thanks for the help. I backed up some files and removed some programs that I don't use anymore. Now everything seems alright. I think it about time to get a bigger hd anyway. Thanks and keep the input coming.

Even though "everything seems alright", you still should run the diagnostics. If you get failure imminent type info and you bought the drives as oem versions, they should be covered under warranty yet. 3 year warranty on OEM drives. If you bought them in the Retail package and didn't buy the extended warranty then only 1 year warranty. Good luck.

You should also run CHKDSK /F on the drive, you may have file corruption - especially if it's short on free space. You should never let your operating system drive get more than 80% full.

well I only have about 33% used on the maid drive, I store everything on themy second HD. Can I run the diagnostics as is or should I start backing up all my programs? What is the quickest way to back up my op system.

You can run the diags as is, they run off a bootable floppy or CD.

There is really no need to back up your OS and programs, they can be reinstalled. The important things to back up are your data files. Quickest way to back up stuff is to another hard drive, either internal or external. You could of course make a complete image of the drive onto another drive, but that requires software that's not free - unless you use WD's setup software to clone the drive to another one. Cloning will replace anything that's on the other drive with the contents of the original drive.
