i have these two choices, i kind of like canon better though so i don't want other brands. these are the ones i am thinking of

what is the difference between these two besides the price

The second one has a higher resolution (dpi), thus better image quality.

Being an HP fan, I haven't used either one, but between the two I, also, would pick the one with the higher optical res.

Higher optical rsolutions are better, interpolated is a fancy name for computer guesswork to make the image better, check this out...http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-3136_7-5548028-1.html?tag=prmo1

I know you want Canon, and Canon is good, but this Epson will blow those away from an optical standpoint for 15 bucks more, it even has a builtin transparency adapter:

The only advantages the Canon has is the USB power and the thin form factor. The downside is the USB power will max out a USB port, it can't be used on a nonpowered USB hub.
