The most popular free virus scanning programme out there is AVG by Grisoft. It has regular updates available and is undoubtadly very good. But being free, it obviously isn't as thorough as some of the ones out there that cost.
The best of this bunch are probably Kaspersky Anti-Virus, and NOD32, programs which not only scan, but also monitor your system for things such as website scripts and such.
I hesitate to recommend Norton and Macafee, the two most popular ones, simply because of their intrusive nature. Constant pop-ups asking you to confirm security rights for things as simple as plugging in a USB device leads many users to constantly click "allow" and disregard the message, effectively rendering the program useless.
Whichever you choose, always accompany it with a good spyware scanner, which are free. Ad-Aware 6 is a good choice.

It is often difficult to say what is best. You really need two products, an AV and a anti-spyware. I really haven't seen any AV programs that do all that great at removing spyware.
The Bad
-Norton AV (Internet Suite) - very resource heavy and does only an adequate job. Symantec's website is great though if you need more info on a virus.
-McAfee - one of the worst that is out their IMO. Very resource heavy and difficult to remove.
The Good
-AVG is a very adequate av program. Not extremely heavy on the resources either. Don't like that it automatically adds its own little tag to your outgoing emails.
-Trend Micro - what I use at work and uses very little resources except when a scan is occuring. Offers real-time protection as well.
-MS Anti-spyware - install it and use the real time protection and you don't have to worry as much about spyware.
-Spybot S&D - another great spyware program and free.

I used to use Trendmicro, but as their security suite didn't support raid, quit using them.
Since then I've used AV,which is free and not bad,but when you go to download new files,a popup came offering the full version for sale, got rid of it.
Then tried this, not bad and not a big resource hog.

I'm currently using Panda's Internet security 2005 and it seems to work well.

NOD32 and kaspersky are, IMO, the best you can get. Make a search, there are many threads like this one.

How come no one is mentioning zonealarm security suite?
I used to have norton systemworks antispyware edition and it seemed to work well but was like a ton of bricks (especially on my old, and weak, computer).
I've replaced it with zonealarm security suite and it seemed much lighter and smoother. I use adaware, spywareblaster and spybot (surf with firefox and OS is XP SP2) and have never (as much as i can recall) found any spyware or trojans.
i've gotten a few viruses sent through emails and a couple while visiting adult ( ) sites but zonealarm detected them right away.
I've also now installed spysweeper instead of spybot's teatimer.
Am I living under the illusion of security?
Do you guys recommend keeping only the zonealarm firewall and using kaspersky for antivirus instead?

HI for AV i would say NOD32 (http://nod32.softwaresecuritysolutions.com/) its supposed to be the best its light dosent take up much ressources updates at least once a day i think.
you also need a firewall you could use the built in xp firewall but it's not recomended, for that Zone alarm is supposed to be the best.
good luck

I disabled the zonealarm antivirus and antispyware and installed Kaspersky antivirus.
Ran a scan and found ZERO.
I'm not complaining but this seems strange to me.
Not a single item?
Could my security systems be that good?
I'd expect one of the programs to find something.
I might try surfing some hacking and cracks sites. they like to infect.

How come no one is mentioning zonealarm security suite?
because he asked for av's not for all in one packages like suites are. PLus there are better antivirus programs than Zonelabs Antivirus IMO
I agree with Freakitchen and ghost if you want to pay for an antivirus. the best ones out there are NOD32 and Kapersky.
here are some free ones

I would say NOD32 is the best out there - for how much sys resources it takes up, it's pretty darn good.

For an antivirus solution I use NOD32. NOD32 has done an excellent job of detecting and stopping all sorts of things from attempting to infiltrate my machine. It monitors very vigilantly and uses very little in the way of system resources. The program updates virus signatures several times a week. I'm very content and completely satisfied with this antivirus product. Here's a link to NOD32 site: http://nod32.softwaresecuritysolutions.com/
For spyware detection and removal, I use Giant AntiSpyware. I have the version of the program before Microsoft bought the company but for the most part it's been unchanged since it was acquired by Microsoft. I find the program very efficient at stopping the nasties from entering my machine. The program is in BETA right now. It requires very little system resources too. Here's a link to Microsoft's site:

Lastly, for pop-up protection, I use a very good free pop-up stopper called Free Surfer. This program does an excellent job of stopping all sorts of pop-ups and is very customizable. I think it's one of the best products out there. Best of all, it's free. Here's a link for more info: http://www.kolumbus.fi/eero.muhonen/FS/

I use AVG. It's the best I have used. It takes up only around 700 kb of RAM. I see no reason to use any other. I have never had a virus on my PC. Ad-Aware and SpyBot are the two spyware programs I use. I don't need real time spyware protection so I don't have MS Antispyware. It takes up too many resources for my tastes.
