Do you prefer AMD or INTEL? What will the build be used for?

assuming he wants 3 ghz, and a 700 budget, Intel.
Doesn't really make that much difference - if he means 3 GHz or 3 GHz "equivalent" the difference in price between an Intel P4 3 GHz and an A64 3000+ is only in the $30 to $40 range, depending on which specific Intel processor. I may be an Intel fanboy, but there is a choice here.

if i choose Intel what board should i use?
and, if choose AMD, what is the difference of AMD64 bit to Intel Pentium 4 3Ghz and what board is compatible with AMD64bit?
i intend to use on paper works, some gaming, watching dvd and listening to mp3.
thanks for your reply guys i'm beginning to have an idea.

With an Intel cpu, the best option is usually an Asus motherboard with an Intel chipset. Before I suggest a specific motherboard we need to know what cpu you are thinking about getting.
The best option for AMD is usually an Asus motherboard with an NForce chipset.

Intel with HT 3.0 Ghz..
what do u mean by AMD 64 bit? is it comparable to pentium 4 ?
thanks..
Yes, the AMD 64 bit (Athlon 64) is a direct competitor to the Pentium 4.

Wow, things have really changed. A couple years ago if you were on a budget Intel was out of the question (unless you wanted a low-end celeron). If you want me to give you what I would choose for that budget, I can. Just not right now... I have to leave for work in 10 minutes.

He wants budget...so scratch the sound card, the mobo has onboard sound. I also dont think that powersupply has a 24pin connecter, or ATX2.0. So he would need another one.

he requested a sound card....therefore I suggest a sound card. I agree, I would try out onboard sound before he gets one but IDK. Not sure about the PSU I will wait for GLC or someone else to come around and see about the PSU in the case....If it is qaulity he can just get a adapter for the connector...Or dishman can pick out any cse he wants and then We will suggest a PSU.

No, thats not a ATX 2.0 psu. Yout best bet would be to either get the Antec Sonata II case and psu, its ATX 2.0 24pin. Or find a quality 350-400watt ATX 2.0 24pin psu and then get a case. Either way, it'll be about the same price, maybe $15 difference. But the Antec Sonata II is a NICE case.

then go for the Antec Sonata....I was going to suggest that, but I couldn't think of the name of the case I just rememberd you had suggested it cuz it had a 2.0 PSU. THanks for that....I also wasnt sure how expensive it was.

thanks mates it is really amazing seeing your replies and suggestions.

Stay away from the ATI Hypermemory and Nvidia Turbocache (TC) video cards - they share system ram.

MSI is not on the same quality level as ABIT, ASUS or DFI...HAL9000 said the shop he used to work at witnessed a high failure rate with MSI motherboards and he would never build with one. I wouldn't either.

Gigabyte are typically budget boards, but they are quality. If I were in your situation I would go with a Gigabyte.

don't forget your Operating System... as well as antivirus software.

Antivirus Software often comes with WinXP. or you can get AVG for free :). I did not realize that MSI was still having quality issues...I thought they had made a turn around with their latest boards but apparently you all dont believe so.

I personally like MSI, but I've never used one of their motherboards. I have always thought they were a decent company. Maybe I'm alone?

can u suggest a mother board of MSI that are compatible with AMD 3000 CPU. and, upgradable to 64bit AMD cpu in the future.Do you mean the Athlon 3000+ Barton? If yes, then you won't be able to upgrade to a 64 bit processor later because the pin counts are different...Socket A (or Socket 462) won't accept a 64 bit processor.
Or are you talking about a Athlon 64 3000+ ? You gotta watch the pin count on these as well because AMD has two 64 bit sockets to choose from...Socket 754 and Socket 939 as well as Socket 940 for server 64 bit processors. Socket 754 won't accept a Socket 939 processor.
