Had an old dell mouse with ball. Started to get old and goofy. A friend gave me a dell by Logithech M/N M-UR69 optical and an AOpen M/N 0-75B optical to try. Both function and under normal cercumstances but when gaming they move fluidly until you try to pinpoint small objects and move small distances. I have tried several speed settings. I know I should get a gaming suitable mouse but I would still like to learn what causes this. I have suitable mouse pad for the optical devices, they seem to work better without the pad though. Should I see if there are any drivers to install or upgrade or will this just slow everything down? Or what else is causing problem.

When you say it's hard to pinpoint small objects, do you mean it travels too far, or does it dither (wiggle back and forward) on the spot, making it hard to click on a point??
Have you tried cleaning the mouse?? Often dirt trapped in the mouse ball areas slows the mouse and makes small movement difficult

When moving far across screen it seems to be smooth but when trying to pinpoint on a small object it is more of a wiggle if you could call it that. It just seems to fight back when trying to contact the small object, glancing off to the side of your comand. I am presently using the Aopen and it has never been used clean out of the box.

Any drivers for your desktop rodents? Check Dell or the manufacturer's site.
It sounds like your dpi( That's that 1200 dpi and so on you see in reviews when they're boasting about a gaming mouse. Basically it's the resolution, dot per inch, and if you have to snipe the higher the number the better.) is too coarse for small in game objects.
If you can't adjust it then you'll have to go shopping.
