Is the way I can keep my kids from changing the password on the screensaver? I thought you had to place the old password in before you could put a new password in? Any help/advice greatly appreciated.

Screen saver passwords in Windows 9x are almost worthless. All it takes is a hard reset and they are in and can change whatever they want. Passwords to log onto Windows are just as easy to get around. If you need security better than what you have, consider upgrading to Windows 2000, or setting a password in the BIOS and shut your machine off when you don't want them to get in.

yes, for full security put a bios pw on your computer, its easy to do and full-proof, however dont forget it or its a bit** to undo.

if it's just the question of protecting the Screensver password and not the OS or the computer then this can be easy achieved by doing followings..

If you have TweakUI for Win98 then click on it's Icon and then select Control Panel check (mark) all the Icons you don't like to have displayed in control panel incuding TweakUI then close it.

In Windows System folder rename the file DESK.CPL to something like DESKS.CPL this will prevent to get to desktop properties , now - everything what has to do with your desktop is proptected to a certain level .. Windows BTW will still be able to access it..

if you need to change your settings then all what you have to do is START > RUN type DESKS.CPL (make sure that it shows \Windows\system Folder)and then adjust your settings

Unless the kids are really some little Hackers -I can assure you that they will not be able to change this - make also sure that you have CLEAR RUN HISTORY on startup marked in TweakUI..

But if you need really a good protection then enabling BIOS password for Both System and SETUP (entering the bios) would be the proper way including locking the computer case at the back with a strong Lock.. Otherwise removing the battery or resetting the BIOS will still allow someone to break into the System..

You could also go into the registry. I think this works, haven't tried it.

1. Open regedit, goto and create HK_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System
2. Make DWORD value called "NoDispScrSavPage" decimal (0 = disabled, 1 = enabled)

Doing this will allow the user to change the background and such but not the screensaver, thereby protecting the screensaver password.

Your kids changing the password... hahaahahah that's really funny. I can just imagine you typing up a document, taking a 5 min rest then the screen saver boots up and there you go... that old password that you put in doesn't work.... hahah sorry. I don't have any suggestions apart from taking a course in forensics, so you can capture the culprit with fingerprint methods.

Install windows NT or Windows 2000. You can protect as much or as little as you want + you can work with real user profiles.
