Ide and sata

i am building a computer for audio editing and sound design.
should my main drive (programs) be IDE and my storage drives be SATA?
what are the advantages/disadvantages?
is speed affected?

Welcome to PCMech. I would recommend the opposite. The faster transfer rates of SATA would benenfit you more as your main drive. You would be accessing the programs more often, so there may be some (although hard to notice) increase in performance. Use the cheaper IDE drives (with 8MB buffer at least) as your storage drives.

I'm a fan of Maxtor and Western Digital. Whatever you get, look at the warranty. Some are being sold with 3 and even 5 year warranties on them. Some may have only a 1 year warranty. Good luck.

I'd say there is so little speed difference between the two that you'd be fine either way.

so the most efficient way to set up my HDD would be for example a 80gb sata drive for my main drive and two 200/250gb ide drives for storage?

It is a small difference, but the transfer rate is a bit faster with SATA. With as often as your editing programs will be accessing info, it will make a slight difference in the long run. As I said tho, it won't be a difference you'll readily notice. What you have described is how I set up both of my workstations.

IDE is older technology.

SATA is newer technology.

Since this is a new build why not use SATA for both drives?

in answer to your question(and i am feeling really new)
i did not know i could go all sata and use one drive for os/programs. even after reading spyder003 help guide i just did not get it.
so now i have bought an 80gb sata drive and a 250gb ide drive.
so i need to know if an all sata system is faster/more efficient than the combination of ide and sata.
cause if it is i'll sell the 250gb ide and replace it with a sata. and my third dive will be sata.

Any difference in performance won't be noticeable.cause if it is i'll sell the 250gb ide and replace it with a sata. and my third dive will be sata.Just use the drives you already have. Performance of your computer will be fine.

Yes, you are good to go. It's more expensive per GB to purchase a SATA drive anyway, so IDE is good cheap storage. Let us know how your build goes. Good luck.
