I have a machine now with two sata drives, one of which contains windows xp.

I am building a new machine and wanted to transfer the windows xp to an old IDE drive and use it on the old machine. I did this by using Maxtors utility program. So now I have a Maxtor drive with windows xp on it. When I unconnect the Sata Drives and connect the Maxtor drive, the machine won't boot, it gets to a message about DMI Data Pool.

On a another issue, can you use IDE drives with sata drives? I have been using a USB external drive with the sata drives ok, but when I try using an IDE drive along with the sata drives, the machine won't boot. What's up with that?

yes you can use IDE drives with your sata drives
does the bios see the 2 drives when they are plugged in? double check that you plugged the IDE cable in correctly on the mobo for the IDE hard drive. i had a similar problem once, i had two drives plugged in and it wouldnt boot found out that i plugged in the ide cable in backwards (it was an older cable that didnt have the little notch on it to help me align it), i switched it around and all is well.
