Hello. I'd like some help please and I'm new so be gentle ;) I'm having a problem burning a disc (I have tried 2) Verbatim DVD-RW.
I am not trying to copy an illegal disc just backup some folders.

Keep getting this error:
http://www.ssnt.co.uk/dvd.JPG

Haven't had any problems before with any discs, I have 3 unbranded DVD-RW and they work fine, DVD-R work fine, CD-R work fine and CD-RW work fine.

I tried CDRWIN and the log says:
11/09/2005 23:12:36 Starting Record CD/DVD: Create data CD/DVD
11/09/2005 23:12:37 SONY DVD RW DW-U14A 1.0d (8-6.1.0.1)

Basically just folders with mpg/mp3/jpgs documents etc

I don't think its what I'm trying to burn thats the problem cos I have tried doing them separate.

try a differant blank disk, for some reason nero is detecting something not legle on what your wanting to do and is stoping itself from doing it.
make sure that you can do it with a cdr too.

is there stuff already on the disc?
have you tried "full erase" and also "quick erase" on top of it?
has the process really failed or is the data actually on the disc (despite the error)?

I have tried 2 of the discs, same thing. Have never had a problem burning discs with the contents I'm doing also I can't burn anything onto the disc so there is nothing to erase :(

Is there another DVD-RW drive that you can try your Verbatim DVD-RWs? You mentioned that the unbranded DVD-RWs, DVD-R, CD-R, and CD-RW work fine. Maybe it's the disc that's the problem.

wait a sec., Jeny, are you saying you are trying to burn files into a DVD-RW with "Nero BurningROM"?
boy, are you asking for trouble; there goes your DVD-RWs, all damaged.
you should be using Nero's "INCD" (or similar programs DirectCD, DLA...) to burn DVD-RWs....doh.

Not necessarily. This explanation from another site:

"InCD is an integrated packet writing solution that has the most stability, ease of use, and compatibility, across all Windows operating systems. Packet writing is the method of writing data in small increments (by packets) onto a rewritable media. InCD is made by Ahead Softare and it's the ideal partner for Nero Burning ROM.

Automatically launched when Windows is booted, InCD provides flexible drive letter access to the CD-RW, CD-MRW, DVD RW, DVD-RW or DVD MRW drive providing simple drag and drop or direct save options within applications. Files can be saved, renamed and deleted, just as with other rewritable storage mediums such as floppy or hard disk. InCD is fully compliant with the UDF 1.50 standard in legacy mode and UDF 1.02 for MRW.

InCD works exclusively with rewriteable medias (CD-RW, CD-MRW, DVD-RW, DVD RW or DVD MRW). Medias which can only be written once cannot be written using InCD. "

InCD, therefore, works like the old drag and drop method when writing to a floppy disk. Nero Burning Rom will also work just fine for burning RW media and offers all the same capabilities as InCD. Plus you don't have to have InCD running in the background all the time when you use Burning Rom.

Very simple - don't use those Verbatims. Your burner doesn't like them. It happens.

Jeny, have you by chance just recently updated your Nero by going to nero.com and downloading updates for it? Because I recently had problems burning DVDs after updating my Nero and was also getting "Record CD/DVD Failed" messages so I decided to download firmware updates for my DVD burner and bingo, it started working again. My drive was a Plextor PX-712A.

No I havent but then I don't think my copy of Nero is legit :( I got the same error using CDRWin so maybe it is these discs?

Might not have anything to do with the brand. I still have 3 packs of Memorex DVD-Rs that always give me errors on the first try. Drive pops the disc out and says "... error" (Sorry, I stopped reading the message). I push the load button and select "Burn this project again" option in Nero and it burns fine and the discs are ok. My previous packs Memorex never gave me this error.

You should have received some basic oem software with the drive...

You might still want to look for a firmware update. It's really easy. At least it was with my Plextor.

My CD-RW are Verbatim

A DVD-RW is not a CD-RW. I'm not saying that the drive does not like ALL Verbatim media, I'm saying that the drive may just not like that particular Verbatim media.

DVD+RW seem to work much better for me, I've never had a great deal of luck using the -RW disks, I own a Sony 720a and have tried using sony's DVD-RW, I didn't like them either, its also advisable to re-format the disks with any change of drive, use InCd to do that, use the commonest UDF format, not all disks are compatible flashing the firmware with a later version can help with disk compatibilty.
