View Full Version : How (and whether) to update drivers for MSI RX-800

I've just put a new computer together which includes an MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum motherboard and an MSI RX-800-TD128E graphics card. (No powerhouse, I know, but neither am I -- gaming isn't what I do.)

I used the MSI Live Update utility to flash the mobo BIOS and update the drivers. It also offers the opportunity to update the "VGA" BIOS and drivers (which I assume refers to the whole graphics card rather than whatever little bit of it is devoted to bare-minimum VGA). The utility reported that the BIOS was up to date, but it offered no less than five versions of the driver, with numbers ranging from 6430 to 6476. These were all labeled "MSI version." The version on the card, however, has a higher number than any of these (6505), though it lacks the MSI label.

So my first question is, would changing to any of the versions on the MSI site be a step forward or a step back? How much weight should I be giving that "MSI version" label?

And my second question is, if the lower-numbered MSI versions would be an improvement on plain 6505, can I go right to one with the highest number, or do I have to start with the lowest and load them all one at a time? (I mean, they must have some reason for listing five versions instead of just the latest one.)

The benefit of anyone's knowledge or experience would be received with gratitude.

(Next time I post I'll try to have a signature ready with all the specs.)

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. If you are not having any issues with the current drivers, it makes no sense whatsoever to downgrade to an older driver. There is also no advantage to using a MSI-specific driver over the generic ATI Catalyst driver - MSI's drivers are all based on the generics.
