ive looked at a lot of parts and know pretty much what i want thanks to this forum

for the processor im gonna get an AMD. My problem is that i dont know the difference between Newcastle, Venice, and Clawhammer. They all look pretty much the same and cost about the same so what exactly is the difference and which should i buy? What is the advantage of 939 over 754?

i also dont know what to do with the monitor because i want a CRT that is reliable but cheap. Most of the CRTs seem to have some type of problem and as a first time builder im looking for a monitor that people have used and liked.

speakers are an afterthought i just have no idea what to look for. around $50 id think

939 is newer than 754, also supports dual-channel (Check out this thread (http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=67892) ) Venice is 939, the other two are socket 754.

Of the three you have listed, Venice is the newest core.

Check out either one of these processors, one's $190 and the other is $219.

for $219-$190=$29 more i'd go with Athlon 64 3500+, i mean the 3200 operates at 2.0 GHz while the 3500+ at 2.2GHz

What size? For 130 dollars (around 155 shipped), newegg has a 17" Viewsonic (Silver/black) that is VERY nice. I used it for my girlfriend's computer and it's one of the best looking CRTs I've ever seen. For a 19 inch, you could probly find the same thing for around 200 (30 for shipping as well).

Alas, here it is in the 19" Form.

hmm that sounds good but the samsung 17" is around the same price and has a smaller dot pitch (.20 mm as opposed to .25 mm)
does that really matter? is one more reliable than the other?
