For many people, Google first showed up on their computers as a lone item on a long list of Web bookmarks. Since then, it has grown to be much more — an e-mail account, a browser toolbar, a photo album and a map of the world.

Now the Mountain View, Calif., company is offering a program that can replace much of the Windows Start menu, and maybe even the Windows desktop itself.

Its Google Desktop 2.0 software (a free beta-test download for Windows 2000 and XP is available at http://desktop.google.com/ ) aims to be your first stop for information on and off of your computer

Google is taking over everything, they're crazy. And I mean that in a good way. Props to them. Google inc. is such a good inspiration.

Been using Desktop Search for awhile. The first version wasn't all that great but the current beta (can't they ever get anything out of beta) is great particularly in Outlook.

You know Google requires their people to work one day a week on a personal project of theirs. This is how many of these things have come about. I keep trying to get my boss to buy into that. Something like 1 day a week I spend on a personal project like the new AOE3 or something, hehe.

I could definitely do one days research of Guild Wars a week. And Google is trying to get a finger in every pie, if they can't build it they buy it. Good luck to them though, I say... they've made Google a household name, and now they cash in on it.
