well, it died from what i can see. Been problematic for a while with an obnoxiously loud HDD and very slow transfers. clearly a disk problem. Today the battery went down all the way as i was in camden for the weekend (thurs-sun) and had no chance to charge it. So i recharged it in the dock and all was good, i was playing a couple songs with it after it charged halfway, then put back in to charge more. then i went to play songs off it, so i went to the playlist, picked my song, etc. It just froze--it was in the dock at the time, so its frozen with teh battery charged full thing even after being pulled from the dock, it says the song name and its at 0:00 on teh song (hasnt started playing yet)...I tried reset and re plugging int he power cord a few times with no luck. it doesnt respond to any buttons, either. Worst of all, there is no HDD sound at all, its just frozen like that. hold switch doesnt do anything either, usually a little lock icon appears on the screen when its on but no such luck here. I'd like to avoid those stupid RMAs...ive begin to hate them. Can i just bring it to the store if i didnt buy it there and have them handle it? i would assume things might be a little faster that way too with less down time here.

also if this has happened to anyone and they fixed it, let me know. the battery wont die for a LONG TIME if the HDD isnt spinning, i know that. and when it does i'd assume it wont turn back on, but if the battery dies sometime soon i will try just recharging it. other than that i cant imagine much that would fix it because it wont accept any input from the buttons and whatnot.

EDIT: i think the warranty is 1 year. i bought this right around the beginning of December last year, so im assuming warranty is still good.

I'm having the exact same symptoms on my U2 iPod. Especially the loud HDD. Now I'm getting that folder symbol with the exclaimation point. I'm sending it to Apple, I don't think Apple store can do anything with mine or yours. Go to the Apple support site and you can send your iPod to them for repair. I think it's $30 but I haven't worked out the specifics yet.

I was told by Apple my warrenty was gone after six months.

warranty coverage should be one year, and you can take it to the store if that is where you bought it. If you bought it online then you'll have to send it in.

warranty info straight from apple

How long is my iPod covered by Apple’s warranty?
Your iPod is covered for one year by Apple’s Limited Warranty for iPod. Warranty service for eligible repairs is available at no charge for twelve months from the date of original retail purchase (”date of purchase”). If you have purchased an AppleCare Protection Plan for iPod, there will be no shipping and handling fee. A $29.95 shipping and handling fee will apply to all warranty repairs performed six months after date of purchase.

I think Yugo's came with a better warranty.

ive had the same problem with my Ipod(s). first the infamous battery problem then a disk problem, now a problem with the color screen.

Thankfuly, i had purchased the Replacement Plan from Best Buy - and they have given me a new iPod each time. (i am on my 3rd, soon to be 4th because of a screen problem).

in my opinion - iPods are nothing but trouble. i would purchase a Zen Micro Photo (my dad has one - thier pretty nifty) but unfortunatly, i would end up with over $500 of iPod accesories that i would not know what to do with.

Take it over to your nearest AppleStore and have them fix/replace it.
With all of NYC (and Eliot Spitzer to) looking over their collective shoulder the AppleStore hasn't faltered yet.

(un?)fortunately its working again. I wanted to get a new one to get rid of the hdd problems and because of the freezing, as im sure it will happen again in the future. for some reason in the morning hte frozen screen was gone and instead it was just blank. started it up today, got the apple logo, waited, then it worked after giving the low battery icon on/off a few times...weird.

Just go into the Apple Store anyway, explain the problems you've been having with it (make sure to emphasise that it stopped working), and chances are you can get a replacement anyway.

eh i tend to doubt it, but its worth a shot, my mom is going up that way so im gunna have her do it, but ill type out the problem, s/n, purchase date of the ipod so they understand fully. Most times companies really wont replace stuff unless they have no choice.

BTW: some people seem to say the apple store wont fix/replace it? The reason i want to do it there is cuz i hate dealing with stupid automated online customer support (the kind where i explain that my ipod is frozen and the hard drive is making weird noises and they ask me if the battery is charged or if my headphones are plugged in)

I didn't purchase it at the apple store.

The Apple store has always swapped out ipods, they keep non-retail units in the stores for that reason. I've had 2 swapped out so far.

ok well i typed up a quick review of the problem for my mom to take to the store. Hopefully they will understand my concern that it will freeze again and that it clearly has SOME type of HDD issue, and either swap in a new hard drive or just give me a new one. We'll see how it goes.
