Noob HDTV editing question

Hi all, I recently got an HDTV and upgraded my cable service to a HDTV DVR set top box(Motorola DCT 6412) . The set top box has firewire out and I have connected this to a VCR. I recently recorded some college football games and they look great! Now I would like to edit out the commercials. What do I need to get the HDTV into my PC to edit it. Do I need an HDTV card such as the MYHD MDP-130 or can I run a fiirewire cable from the VCR to my PC and edit it using editing software that can edit HDTV.
