have had a pny geforce 6600 for a few months now. And it keeps overheating after say two hours. it doesn't even matter if i'm doing word processing for an hour or two, if i try say HL2 deathmatch after having it on for a while all the graphics are garbled. this can't be right for a new reasonably decent card, Surely? I think it has a three ear warranty.
When it does give an error message it says:
display driver stopped responding.
nv4_disp display driver has stopped working normally, save and restart.
Have bought a vcool to keep temps down plus i have a low system temp.
Is there a program that tests the graphics card ( not benchmarking) to c if it's faulty?

Hmm, is the fan on the card working? try getting a new heatsink and fan for the card... ionno its just my own opinion.

Since u got a warantee just get a replacement, dont bother messing with the fan or heatsink because if u remove the stock one, that often voids the warantee

How did you conclude it was the graphics card heating up? I suspect a driver error more than anything.

yeah will prob try get a replacement. I decided it was an overheating graphics card because the problem only happens after say 90 mins or so. And the problem being all the screen's normal display appears distorted with diff colors and flashing bits. And after half an hour of being off, everything works fine. have spent a fair bit trying to sort.
new hard drive, vcool cooler, new psu. more fans. I'm guessing a card of this type shouldn't be overheating?

Am seriously considering returning my pny geforce 6600 to misco but i'm not sure how to go about it. Because it's just my word that it keeps overheating after less than two hours use , so much so that all the display is affected ( only on graphically intensive games), and my system definately has a low system temp with vcool cooler( which is meant to reduce temp by a further 15 degrees of the graphics card).
What's to stop them from saying it could be caused by all sorts of things?

The answer is nothing.
Except for the fact that if they lie to you they lose a customer and the video card market is fierce.
Worse, it's gossipy.
Which means you might tell us and then they'd get a rep as a company you don't want to deal with.
Eventually a group of lawyers would show up or worse some guys from the state D.A's office.
Of course they could have fled the country with the cash before this happens but you can already see where this is going.... .
No guarantees but they'll probably be fair about it (unless the warranty gives them an out, or you don't follow instructions, or something else happens next wednesday).
I've never dealt with the folks you bought your card from so I can't comment on them.
I have dealt with ATI though and they're scrupulously honest.
As for returning the card; go over to the web site, click on support, and find out what you have to do to get an RMA, that's Return Merchandise Authorization, from them.
