Hello and thank you in advance for any usefull/helpfull info. I have a roughly 2 year old HP Pavilion running Win XP Home. The computer came with a fairly slow dvd rw drive and a cd-rom drive. I was interested in DL burning and replaced the cd-rom with a sony dv-22a DL multi format drive. It work really well until I tried to overburn a CD one day. It burned the entire CD (I think something like 710MB). But at the end of burning, just kept running and making clicking noises. I had to forcefully eject the CD as it also locked up the computer. After that, the drive would no longer recognize any form of CD blank or otherwise. It still seemed to recognize DVDs however. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling drivers to no avail. Figuring it to be a drive malfunction as a result of my careless burning, I bought another similar sony DL multi format burner and installed. The new drive will read the volume label on the CD but nothing else and will not recognize blank CD media. Also, when installed, XP placed separate drive labels for a DVD RW and a CD drive in the Mycomputer area. Both optical drive jumpers are set to CS and the IDE controller properties for both primary and secondary channels are set to DMA I think. Any thoughts?

I think you may be having bad luck with Sony drives. RMA the new one.

Is there any way to tell if the drive is physically damaged?

Maybe try it in another computer.
