Someone e-mailed me this problem. I figured I'd let you peripheral savvy people take a knock at it.


win 95 problem
hey maybe you can help me with a problem

ive got a comp that when you boot the system in norm mode its like the keyboard and mouse arent there but in safe mode they will work
the last time it worked rite i downloaded something called winsoc for a game for my kids and the comp had to restart and when i got back in the room the darn thing was froze and ive just about give up on it and thrown it out the windo can u help me?

That was probably the winsock 2 update. There should be a folder somewhere called "ws2bckup" - I dont remember if it's under the root, program files, or windows - but there is a restore in there that you can get at in safe mode.

If they need to play a game that requires winsock 2, it would be best to upgrade to Win 98 if the computer has the horsepower to run it.

ok im the person that sent the question and i found a thing that said ws2backup.dat what should i do with it delete it or what?

Okay - look in your control panel - add/remove programs, and see if there is a listing for "winsock 2 update". If so, just uninstall it from there.

ok ive looked and i cant find anything like that in there!
the only place i found it was in temporary internet files

Okay - is there an entry in add/remove programs that says "Restore Winsock 1.1"? If so - do that.

Boot into safe mode, go into control panel, add/remove programs, Windows Setup, communications. Uncheck "dialup networking". Do not restart the computer yet. Then stay in control panel and open Networks, remove ALL components. Restart the computer and it *should* work. Then you can reinstall what you need to get it back on line.
