Greetings - have had this mobo and an FX-51 for a little over 2 years. Is it possible to upgrade the processor to FX-52 or 53 or higher?

Thanks.

Hi raf1,

Welcome to PC Mechanic !! :)

In a word: No. That mobo is a 940 pin unit and the newer FXs are 939 pin CPUs.

Hi TR - thanks for the info. I should have known that, but I get into deep water pretty quickly on technical specs. Thanks again.

Note that the FX 53, 55, 57 cost a pretty penny, and in comparison a new motherboard really isn't that much more money(if your paying so much for the CPU a good mobo should be invested in).... Plus most new 939 boards are nforce4.

Can't reuse the registered ECC ram in a NF4 board though.

One of the above bits of information is not correct. You can upgrade from an FX-51 to an FX-53 since they are both 940 pin CPU's. In my opinion it would be a waste of money to upgrade to an FX-53 since the architecture is the same and the only difference is that the FX-53 is 200MHz faster than the FX-51 You can overclock your FX-51 for free (provided you have adequate cooling) to the speed of an FX-53 relatively easy. The FX-55 and above are all 939 pin. There is no such CPU as an FX-52.

You can always put an Opteron 254 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103566) in there. Im sure that board would support it with a BIOS update. An Opteron 254 is basically an FX-57 but in a 940 pin configuration and a lower price. Same clock speed, same cache, same everything. Check the ASUS website to see if they have a BIOS update that supports it :).

According to the Asus compatibility chart, the 254 is not supported.
