I have searched on the forums but still I am having trouble with this one. Even bought a book on it but it's not helping. I have a dell XP machine I'm trying to connect to a Gateway win 98 machine. When I run the setup wizard on the XP machine everything seems to go okay and I create the set up disk. When I put the set up disk in the 98 machine it downloads the files and then restarts and then comes up with the message network setup wizard can't find your network hardware. I have both machines connected to a router and they both can access the internet through it. When I open up network neighborhood on each machine they show the other machine with the comp's name. When I try to open the Xp machine from the 98 machine it keeps asking for a password but I have no idea what it could be because I never set one up. They can ping each other and the firewalls are disabled; I have no idea how to get this to work. I can't open the 98 from the XP either I enabled file and print sharing so what gives?

Make sure file and print sharing is allowed in the XP firewall's exception list, and make sure you don't have a software firewall running on the XP machine.

The 98 machine has to be set up with the same workgroup name as the XP machine, and it has to be set up to log into Microsoft Networking. Password is optional (unless it's XP Pro), but username is mandatory and you have to log in, not just hit Cancel.

The XP machine must have user created shares and either the Guest account enabled or a local user added to correspond with the user login on the 98 machine.

After a little help from the tutorial on www.homenethelp.com I have the XP machine able to see anyting on the 98 machine that is shared. I still can't get the 98 machine to see anything on the XP machine except its name. In Network neighborhood when I double click it a network password box comes up and asks for a password but I have not setup a password and don't know what to do. I think I set up the guest thing correct?? Little help someone.

Thanks for the link but after reading it I think I have everything correct but still can't connect to the XP computer. I can ping it but can't see the printer or the shared files. The XP can see the shared files on the 98 though.

It would be a good idea to start your own thread on this issue. You'll get more (and better) responses this way.
