Need some major CPU cooling

Alright guys I am having a heat problem. I was kinda worried about my cpu heat lately (I have a p4 3ghz), under load it has been running uncomfortable close to 60c. Well during a LAN party on friday, after many hours of play, it began to overheat. It went past 71c and my alarms began to go off, so I shut er down. I am tired of it. I just bought a cheapo cpu fan/heatsink when I built it, now thats not enough. I want the absolute best cpu cooling system for a 775 cpu I can get that is under $100. Please help! Thanks a lot.

If it's LGA775 retention type...you need to be sure that the heatsink is fully snapped in...those little pins are very tricky to get in, and if you don't have them in all the way you won't have good contact between the heatsink and the CPU. Be careful though, you mightl want to take the mobo out of the case so you don't snap it when pressing the pins down.

It used a brace underneath the motherboard with eyelets to screw the heatsink in, and it is airtight. I thought of that. I even used arctic silver thermal compound instead of the stuff that came with my fan, then made sure it was tight again.

What kind of case fans do you have? The best heatsink in the world won't do you much good if you don't have airflow in the case to remove the heat from the case.

I have 3 80mm's. one blowhole, one exhaust in rear, and one in front, intake from the bottom. I was going to buy a 120 and put it for my rear exhaust and put another 80mm for intake in the front.

Oh, is this a stock heatsink or an aftermarket one?

Anyhow, you could look at the Zalman line. They have some ones with 120mm fans that are really quiet and keep your CPU cool - but you have to have enough clearance. They do have a smaller 92mm one if the other won't fit. The provide a list of mobos that either do or don't work with the cooler; and they provide the clearance requirements so if your mobo isn't listed.

Aftermarket, mascool. I was looking at zalman, my friend was telling me about a $70 cooler that mixed a bunch of different cooling methods into one?? btw I have plenty of clearance space.

Ya, I instantly fell in love with the first one, plus a 16db noise level from 40db would be nice as an added bonus to a cooler cpu, my comp sounds like a 747 right now... anyway, any clues on how in the heck that would attach to a 775 using those clips it shows??? and will this fit in my case? and Aspire X-Cruiser, if I remove the cowl air intake thing?

Im not so sure about the Tt one, it may "look" good but alot of things they have are just flashy lately and dont preform, i used to really like Tt but now for some reason i think there more looks then anything imo, im sure a good themalright hs paired with a nice fan will work out alot better.

run the model numbers in the pricewatch search engine you may find it cheaper...I found the xp-90 for 40.00 at svc compared to eggs 66.00

Mitch, where trying to help. Look at Thermalrights coolers, yea they may not look as "fancy" as the ones you have picked out but they preform better. And i really woudent want either one of those very top heavy cpu coolers sitting on my cpu. Honestly i really dont know which of the 2 you picked out is better, but i will assure you thermalright will beat them both out.

Look at the chart on this page, granted the Thermalright 120 dosent preform as good because its made out of aluminum, look at the SLK-948 which greatly out preformes the Tt and the rest of the competition. Thermalrights copper heatsinks preform exeptionally well.

It seems im just trying just to push thermalrights product but thats because it is a good cooler, you can ask some of the real hardcore oc'ers on this forum..expecially tin, who will vouch for thermalright.

Never trust Tt's noise ratings. They're purely for marketing purposes. Trust the other people here, Thermalright makes some of the best CPU heatsinks. If you have room, you could look into the scythe ninja as well. It performs at least as well as the xp120.

Just make sure you get a reliable,quiet fan if you get one of these heatsinks. I recommend panflo or nexus.
