Intergrated NIC good or bad?

I have a dell desktop dimension 4700 sitting here with an internet issue. Now I went into the command prompt, ran ipconfig and it all checks out there, proceeded to run ping command on google.com and it pinged out fine. Now there is Norton internet security 2004 on the machine however the installation is damaged and I don't believe the firewall is active, and how would you test the NIC, is there software to do that or do I have to get a new NIC and test it that way?

What functionality of the NIC do you want to test? If you can ping external sites, then the NIC is working, as is the Windows TCP/IP stack. What problems are you having?

The issue is that internet explorer will not open any sites, it comes up as "Page cannot be displayed". Sounds like NIS 2004 is still alive and preventing me from using IE. The only thing is, is that the options has been damaged and needs to be reinstalled so I should just probably unbinstall since it is a past version anyways right?

Yes, I'd uninstall it and stay away from Norton products entirely. There are several better options, like using a router's integrated firewall, Zone Alarm, or even Windows Firewall.

The FIRST thing you should do is uninstall NIS. If it's damaged, who knows what kind of problems it's causing.

OK, uninstalled NIS, restarted the PC, didn't do anything. Then went into IE/tools/Internet options then checked off automatically detect settings box, didn't do anything. I did check the LED's on the NIC. There is one orange one that is solid and one blinking yellow one. I don't know if that means anything but I am stuck as to what to do now......reinstall IE 6 maybe??

first would like to know what version of windows you are running ,it doesnt sound like your running windows xp,,if not;;i highly suggest upgrading to it,as for the norton thing i highly agree its junk and some of the worst anti virus and internet security i have ever come across,,the AVG free version works circles around norton and doesnt use up all of your ram doing it..i would also suggest defragmenting your hard drive if you havent done that in awhile too.

Thanks guys ill try that winsock fix GLC and get back to you guys. Another thing, I know that if your winsock is damaged you have no internet but what exactly does it do?? Also I am running XP Home, sorry for not specifying:o

Nice, just want to say you guys rock, the winsockfix.exe did the trick. So I guess the winsock is the registry key that tells xp what IE is and or does or is that wrong? Other than wanting to know that, just want to say thanks glc and everyone else :D
