This toshiba laptop was powered on with an unprotected dialup connection during a freak lightening storm, after the home and 2 neighboring homes were hit with a huge bolt of chain lightening, the toshiba was left with an inoperable hard drive.

I replaced the hard drive with a WD HDD from newegg.com, gave the laptop to my Son, the toshiba laptop worked fine even the dialup modem still worked (was capable of dialing and connecting with my cell phone) although we use broadband.

After 2 months the laptop just shut down (my 17yr old son tells me), the first thing I did was try the power cord/psu on a different laptop, and it powered up fine, but for some reason on this toshiba there is no led activity, no fan, no audible sound.

I went a little farther and looked at the CPU (2.2 P4), the die is black shiny, no chips, looks clean both sides, and throughout the hardware all I could visualy detect was a slight dark spot (electrical burn) where the modem to receptacle wires lie against the plastic case (obvious from the initial damage from lightening) the capacitors look normal and I find no hot spots on the sys board.

I only have experience with AMD mobile CPU's (I have one in the desktop), so I am not sure if "black shiny" is a good color for Intel, and would appreciate if someone could either say yea or nah, or post a link to a good image.

I already have a feeling I need a MoBo, but you folks have done a great job of schooling me, I appreciate your input, best to yah...John

P.S. the power receptacle is visually good
