Nec Dvd burner

I bought a Nec 3540 burner 3 weeks ago and burned about 20 backups sucessfully.The problems started when my software would sometimes not recognize the drive,rebooting the pc would fix this issue.Now my drive will not play dvd movies,music cds or record anything.when you insert a disc nothing happens.I checked in device manager and everything looks fine.I also updated the firmware to the drive,still does not work.Does anyone have any ideas to fix this problem??
My pc is a new dell and the drive is new!!

If possible, try the NEC in another computer. If it doesn't work there, it's defective. Contact the vendor or NEC for a RMA.

Doesn't matter if it's new or not...any device can die at anytime. It happens.
