external HDD question

hi guys, i just bought an external HDD case and put in my own HDD...but when i turn it on i get the blue screen of death. Do i need to set the jumper pins to something other then "single/master"? or is there something else i'm doing wrong?

some more misc. tidbits:

- the HDD does have (i think) an OS on it, which i planned on formatting
- XP does recognize the "new hardware" and it appears to be installing drivers, etc...and that is when it crashes

Single/master is fine, so is cable select. You might want to slave it into your IDE and reformat it and try again - or try it on your other computer.

ok, so i installed a maxtor 160Gb HDD into this enclosure and plugged it into both my laptop and desktop...both resulted in the bluescreen of death. I formatted the drive seperatly in my desktop and then tried again...same result. So i used my Western digital 260Gb drive doing the same things and it also resulted in the same bluescreen. what am i doing wrong??

You may not be doing anything wrong...the external housing might be defective. Since the hard drive works in your desktop but it doesn't work in the housing when connected to two different computers, that would suggest the housing is bad.

ok, here is the latest...the case did turn out to be defective, i sent it back and got a new one. Now when i plug it in, all the drivers actually got loaded and all was well. When i looked in my computer it showed the drive and all was well. When i clicked on the drive it said "drive has not been formatted, would you like to do this now?" i clicked yes. Then it shows me the format screen, and it only shows 31.8 Gb....the drive is 160Gb. So i select format anyways to see what happens. My computer shuts down and restarts itself.


So now what do i do?

I assume you are using winxp. If you are trying to format the external drive with a FAT32 filesystem, winxp and win2000 have a maximum partition size of 32GB. If you want a bigger partition, you would have to use NTFS or use commercial partitioning tools rather than the native winxp/win2000 tools.

Remove the drive from the housing and install it on the IDE in your computer, format it there. Then put it in the housing.

Ok, so i did what you said and formatted it in my computer using WD data lifeguard tools DOS version. First I zero filled it then i set the partition size (full 160Gb). I re-installed it into the external drive and it does that exact same thing, it shows only 31.6Gb and it won't let me format it through windows. I'm sure this enclosure is ok for this size of drive, i specifically checked before i bought it. So anyways that's were i'm at, any ideas?

I meant for you to partition and format it in Windows (disk management) when installed in the computer on the IDE. THEN put it in the housing.
