Backing up system [Archive]

Hi gang

I have heard people say they back up their system by using a extra HD. I have 2 HD's on my computer. I want to back up my main. One idea I heard was to transfer you main HD stuff to your second HD, and the chances of both HD's going bad is pretty rare. I know there are so many different thoughts on backing up your system.

Is there a good program, software, etc that wont break the bank, that you can do this with.? I have been hearing some strange noises coming from the computer that gives me the idea I am in need of doing this. before it is too late. I have XP home, SP2.

I suggest you look at the <a href="http://www.pcmech.com/show/internal/855/">PC Backup Guide</a> written only a few weeks ago by Joel. On the last page, he recommends several software to use - among them, Norton Ghost. I would like to add on Acronic TrueImage.

I have had good luck with Norton Ghost. I like it because you can back up the ENTIRE system, Windows and all. Then, should your system crash, you just reformat the HDD, throw in your Ghost disks, and, wala, you're back up and running.

Ghost is fine for "all or nothing" like you describe, but does it support selective backup and restore, all in a Windows interface?

I have tried Norton Ghost 2003 ver 9. I have tried the latest trial download of Acronis Trueimage, I have tried the Western Digital drive copy utility and also the Maxstor Maxblast 4 utility to clone/backup my hard drive. I have an Win XP Pro OS.

The only one that worked for me with mixed results, was the Maxblast 4, all the others didn't produce a drive that would boot. I tried the drive to drive copy, backup / restore etc.. It has been frustrating at best. Maxblast 4 produced a drive that would boot, but I had trouble with some duplicate registry entries in MS Office 2003, which then needed to be reloaded. I lost some older Office apps (Frontpage and MS Photo editor) in the process.

I am going to reload WinXP and then all my applications from scratch on my backup drive.
