If you want to look into it, openoffice is free and is compatable with word, excel and powerpoint formats.

I use OpenOffice.org and I really like it. I would take a look at that for an easy solution.

If you are a student or have a student in the house you can get the student version of Office 2003. Plus you get 3 licenses.

MS WORKS is around $100 Canadian or less(in Staples/Future Shop), it does contain full version of WORDS.

If you just need a word processor this one is free and compatible with Micorsoft Word : http://www.abisource.com/
It's the one I've been using for the past few years.

Microsoft works 8.0 for 40.00 USD http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0002D152W/qid=1135347046/sr=8-1/ref=pd_bbs_1/103-6775301-9087819?v=glance&s=software&n=507846
If you want the package and if you are a student or teacher then get the academic version of office for Word, Excel and Powerpoint for about 100 USD.
I just noticed you are in Canada so these prices must be adjusted accordingly.

If you do buy Works, please do the world a favor and throw away any thing that has Works on it. Keep Word, Encarta, Money and Streets and Trips but Works has gotta go. There are also several versions of Office.
Basic = Word, Excel, Outlook
Standard = Word, Excel, Outlook, Powerpoint
Small Business = Word, Excel, Outlook, Powerpoint, Publisher
Professional = = Word, Excel, Outlook, Powerpoint, Publisher, Access, One Note

You get three licenses with the academic version of Office 2003? Cool, I didn't know that. Thanks for the info.

I agree about MS Works - avoid it! Go for one of the free progs. I like Open Office.

True the works bundle has a bunch of stuff that people beyond their first ever computer would want, and also that installing is a bear since you have to install each piece of software separately, but for 40 dollars for a full version of Word, that is pretty hard to beat-legally.
The academic is a good deal since you can install it on three PC's per EULA, it does not qaulify for the upgrade path on next version, but it's price is below the upgrade version anyway so if you 'must' have the most recent then just buy the next academic for less money. The drawback is if you ever need the database program, Access, no you must go with either a stand alone copy of Access or a full office pro.

I am currently using Open Office and I can complain about its performance to cost ratio ;). Im having problems with the spell checking though... if I type somthing incorrectly, it won't be underlined, and when I use the spell check wizard, it says there are no errors. How can I fix this?

Yep you get three. I am a student and I will be getting this for myself. And its half the price for just the regular office suite. $149.99 USD and I have seen Fry's put it on for $119.99 before.

Two bit, look on E-Bay. You should be able to find just Microsoft Word on there. Microsoft Word was released as a seperate program, because I have one. It came along with one of the computers I bought years ago. It is an older version, Microsoft Word 97, not sure if it is still released by itself or not.

I would much rather prefer a free suite than an expensive app... just can someone give me the option or something that you set for it to auto spellcheck

I found this at computerhope.com : OpenOffice
You can spell check a document in OpenOffice writer by following the below steps.
1. Open OpenOffice writer and the document you wish to edit.
2. Press the F7 key.
or
1. Open OpenOffice writer and the document you wish to edit.
2. Click Tools
3. Click Spellcheck

If that isn't it then I think you'll have to manually install the spellcheck dictionary.
Go here : http://lingucomponent.openoffice.org/download_dictionary.html
I'm not sure why you didn't get it automatically but that seems to be what's missing.

Would it be easier and more problem free just to reinstall Open Office?

No reason not to try.
I would use a fresh download though.
