I'm thinking of upgrading the video in my dad's HP so I can play some games and i need to know what the best sub $200 AGP video card I can get is. Its doesn't matter if its nvdia or ati. Thanks

I don't think you can get anywhere upgrading an HP - if you're referring to the rig in your signature, your system will probably not support anything more powerful than a FX5200XT. On the flipside, the computer can probably use a gig of RAM for games.

Yeah, I didn't think about the power requirements. But I was going to get another 512 of ram anyway or maybe just by a new gig and replace the old 512. Thaks for your help guys and gals.

I'm thinking of upgrading the video in my dad's HP ( HP Pavillion a530n/ AMD 3200+ 64/ nVidia 5200XT/ 512 PC2700) so I can play some games and i{I} need to know what the best sub $200 AGP video card I can get is. There are sources for higher rated aftermarket psu's that are intended for HP replacement at more reasonable cost than buying from HP. You need to avoid buying from the low quality import brands, however. Also, TTBOMK, the "XT" designation is ATI's, and there has been no "GT" for the FX 5200 VGA.

The FX 5200 was the least capable GPU from nVidia the year that the FX's replaced the GF4's. The past two years, it was replaced in turn by the 6200, and later by the undesireable 6200TC/ 64 Bit. The original 128 Bit 6200 wasn't half bad in its price range, and didn't require added psu power.

The bottom end (for games) of the FX line was either the 5600 Ultra, or FX 5700 Ultra, both of which did need added power from the psu. When it came to power use that year, the ATI 9600/ 9600 Pro's were conservative and bracketed the FX 5700, one less capable, one more capable, PLUS the FX's simply didn't include all of the Dx9 functions, unless you bought the two top items (5900/ 5950), and the Radeon 9600 / 9600 Pro's did have every Dx9 function.

According to Tom's Hardware's tests, the Radeon 9600 Pro and the original 128 Bit GF 6200 were comparable, and you can still get 9600 Pro's, while the original GF 6200 has been pushed off the retailers' shelves in favor of the cheaper version. You would see a nice jump in gaming capability with little extra power demand if you swapped the FX 5200 for a 9600 Pro (there was a Radeon 9600 XT, but I never had one, and can't say anything about its power consumption).
