Videocard and LCD Monitor Compatibility

I'm in the market for a new monitor and I was thinking of going with a Dell UltraSharp 2005 FPW 20.1".

Reading Dell's website, I noticed a warning about the system needing to be able to display WSXGA+ 1680 x 1050.

I checked out the specs on my card eVGA 6600 128MB PCI-E and its spec sheet says it can display 1600 x 1024 or 1600 x 1200, among other resolutions.

Are either of those close enough or will I have problems?

You may be thinking that if you drop the vertical pixels to 1050 it's okay that the horizontal is 1680.
No, though I remember a lot of attempts when LCDs first went wide screen and digital.
You're up against a ceiling here so it's time to go shopping unless that LCD has an analog connection (You'd have a ceilling of 2000+ on the horizontal then.) but, going by Dell's warning, that doesn't seem likely.

You shouldn't have any problems. Newer graphic drivers should support these resolutions.
I know it's no problem with ATI graphics cards, you can choose 1680x1050, so I don't think nVidia is any different (would be very bad for nVidia if it was otherwise).

DVI isn't limited to 1600 pixels horizontal even in single link.

RJ are we looking at the same thing here?
You can customize thr resolutions with ATI cards so long as they do not exceed the maximum resolutions the card supports, thus 16x10 as well as 16x9.
The maximum horizontal that e-vga card supports in digital is 1600 and new drivers haven't made a difference there.

Well, actually I couldn't believe any new graphics card is limited to 1600 horizontal. Hence I thought that you were referring to DVI itself.

But that the card is limited . . wow . . pretty bad :eek:

Ok, under this circumstances you can't usen the 2005FPW with its native resolution. . .hence it'd be better to not use it at all with that card.
