DirectX problems

yesterday i picked up a radeon x700 (:D ) but when i started it up and ran the 'checklist' thing it said i was missing directx. so i went to the microsoft site to try and dl it, but when i finaly got the webinstall it just ran through, and it jumped to the finished screen w/o hitting the actual installation. then i went to the dxdiag and it said i was missing 2 files. any clue to how i can replace them? if i can get away with it i'd rather now have to reinstall SP2.

You tried to install DX 9.0c on XP without SP2?

no, i have SP2, and i already have DirectX 9.0c installed. the problem is that directx is missing a few files. i did some searching on these forums and sombody said that you might have to uninstall SP2 to get to an older version of directx, then reinstall SP2 and try directx again.

Okay, now I get it.
So DX 9 didn't install as it should have with SP2, it's part of the service pack, and when you tried to install it from the web you got the incomplete install?
What's running on your computer, security software or anything else that runs 'real time' and would be messing with your installs?
Download DX9 to your desktop and before you run it scan your computer and turn off things like your av and anything that would be guarding your registry.
You may even want to try installing it in safe mode.
If none of the above helps then yes, you'd be looking at removing and reinstalling SP2 ( if you haven't done so already download that to your desktop as well ) along with all updates and then trying again to see if you get DX9 installed.
You could also end up doing a repair of XP.

just one little question...when i uninstall SP2 it gives a long, long list of programs that 'may not work correctly' when it is uninstalled. when i reinstall SP2 will those programs will just work like nothing ever happened? 'cause to say the least, im very very fond of many of those programs, and I'd hate to have to reinstall all of them.

Download the full DX9 redistributable and install it. The Web install is a joke.

ok, now i have the full version of directx, and its all installed, but my games arent running with it. ive got the latest version of catalist, and the drivers, but it treats directx like its not even there. any ideas why?

Could you elaborate on that?
Do you mean the games aren't running, your graphics card isn't using the equivalent of agp acceleration for PCI-E?
You can't get catalyst to open so that you can set-up your video card?
What's going on?

the easiest way to put it i guess is for one the games dont run like they should. theyll kinda start up, but then itll cut to the desktop. also when i run the little 'pc check' thing off of the media center launch pad it claims directx isnt installed correctly. hope that clears it up a little.

You're telling me that you've got the current version of Windows MCE?

Okay, now I understand.
You are looking at either a repair install of XP or a reformat, with all the attendent headaches and necessary program reinstalls.
Whatever it is that went wrong down at the API level that's messing up the DX9 install can't really be fixed otherwise.

reapair install? so that like what...uninstalling SP2, repairing using the XP cd then reinstalling SP2 then right?

Yes, you got it.
A full repair will take you past the repair console to Install where you'll be given the option of either installing or repairing (you boot from the cd in the optical drive which you have as first in the boot order).
You will have to reinstall SP2 and all the updates for it.
If that doesn't work then you'll be looking at a format and reinstall.

i can get to the install/repair option, but after that i have problems. ive never really played around in dos a whole lot so i am at a loss of what i should do. hopefully this should be the last question, at least for a while.

Ignore the first Repair option (that's the Recovery Console and you don't want that) and select new installation.
When you get there XP will notice that you already have XP installed and will give you the option of repairing it, say yes to that.
