Diskeeper Lite Defrag program.

Hi folks, have used diskeeper Lite for several months. I like it & haven't had any problems w/it. But I noticed when I upgraded my ram to 1024 Meg it shows a couple of red bands which means fragmented files.

When it runs it seems to run faster since the upgrade & still works fine as far as I can tell. But it didn't show the red bands before the upgrade. Should I be concerened about this? I am a worry-wart in some areas & computers is still one. Do I need to reset something or just use it as is? Thanks, RevCLB:confused: :o

View the report and see what they are. It may be your pagefile. Upgrading the ram may have resized it and it's no longer contiguous.

When a defrag is completed one of the options on that window that pops up is the report.
It's nothing you have to do but click on it and read it occassionally.
The pagefile, also sometimes called the swapfile, is the block of space an OS reserves on a hard drive for use in swapping files when it's out of memory ( well it has other uses but you get the idea ) when you increased your memory to a gig Windows very likely changed the amount of hard drive space it used for the pagefile and the way it used it.
Since Windows takes a 'catch as catch can' approach to files on the hard drive that resulted in fragmented files (this would have happened eventually anyway as the install got older) turning up. Those are the red lines you were wondering about.
Next time you defragment, the green are the immovable files, the blue is for the contiguous ones and the red are the fragmented files.

Thanks folks, will study this more. The program removes all the smaller red areas & show either 0fragments or 1 + some segments. The 2 Red bars are constant & haven't changed at all. Will check report & see what I can figure out.

That's the hibernation file. If you never hibernate the computer, turn hibernation off in power options. That will get you a gig of hard drive space back too.

I've seen XP's system restore also show up as red fragments in DKLite.

When I first got interested in how computers worked I found this site (http://www.pcguide.com/) and spent a lot of time reading about the inner workings of computers. Some of the info might be outdated but most of the information is still worth knowing.

Hi pam123, You & cricket have helped me a lot over the months. I have bookmarked both sites. As for the magizines, I'll have to see if I can afford them. I have 3 different books on "XP for Dummies & they all assume I know how to do the basics on a computer. I Don't. (Read my early posts) I value your your feedback to me but am not sure I can always follow it, or any that you Big Kids give me. I won't stop learning but it takes me a long time. Reclaim those college "search the index" text skills and the "XP For dummies" books will reveal treasures.
It's odd ( well no, but most people don't stop to consider ) but if you can remember what you did in the days of card catalogs a good deal of computer stuff starts to look obvious. It's an extension and an enrichement not a replacement.
When you get lost just remember the monster senior year term paper and break the steps down from there.
Don't get defrag?
Star witn the index in the "for dummies" book and then hit Google and keep spiraling.
It's the same deal you used when you had that sadistic history prof who worked you to death only now you get to take it at your own pace.

Thanks pam 123, These forums & you people still amaze me. No judgement, just facts & encouragement. Only 1 year of college & it was a disaster. Have always loved libraries. Am 61 years old so do remember card catalogs.

Since joining these forums & following the advice (& links) you folks provide I am developing my research skills. Still don't know the right questions a lot of times but have learned, ask another question & get the guidance. You folks at PCMech are the college professors I couldn't learn from before because I can go at my own pace.

Rev, a BIG help is learn how to phrase a Google search. That's how I answer a majority of the questions I reply to here. There is no such thing as a dumb question, but there sure are a lot of dumb answers - mostly provided by people who don't research them and speak off the top of their heads without verifying their facts. It's not how much you know that counts - its the ability to research the correct answers that counts.
